Yep - sums up how we might look at it. Might just be Nicholas and i - then we can play golf - weatherpermitting - before the hockey game. The other factor is I have season tickets to Miami. Buffalo is in town. So do I go up north spending a few hundred on hotel/food and so on - or take the short drive to Oxford to watch what could be an important game in the overall picture of the MAC.
Completely understandable.

Freak ... Decided to stop by ...

Post by BGSU99 »

I thought about heading over to Oxford yesterday, but it was Michelle's weekend to work. With her already missing three of the six games we have tickets for, I didn't feel right going over there if she couldn't go. We will be at the Kent game, though, and are looking forward to the post game festivities! Let us know what we can bring! As for this game, I caught it on Fox and was yelling at the tv. I was really disappointed in the performance (aside from the kickoff returns), and I'm not letting the players off the hook. However, I continue to wonder about the direction of this program. We won bowl games in 2003 and 2004 and have been declining ever since. I'm hoping we can turn this around. We'll see what happens up at Kent. GO FALCONS!

I'll preface this by saying that:

1) Anyone has the right to spend their time and hard-earned money however they want, period.
2) This has nothing to do with a specific person (especially Tech83, whose posts I enjoy and whom I have great respect for) or anyone else and is not to be taken personally. I am NOT questioning anyone's loyalty or love for BG.
3) This is in no way a justification or rationalization of the Miami disaster or the coaching strategies of Gregg Brandon.

So...

Being a fan is not easy. It's sitting through the 47-14 games AND the bowl wins. Being a fan means the highs are sweeter for you than they are for others because you've endured the lows. Anyone can support a team while they're winning. Being a fan means sticking it out when the times are tough because there's a group of men wearing the Orange and Brown who have worked for months (and years) giving their blood, sweat and tears for Falcon football, and you'll stand by anyone that does because you're a Falcon too.

For those who make the trip to Kent, stop by an older Kent fan and shake their hand. They're supporting a program that has had fewer than 5 winning seasons in 30 years. They are not there expecting to be entertained by a fancy offense or a postgame fireworks show. They are there because they love the team that represents the University they love. It's a unconditional love that's not riding on what a scoreboard says at any given moment. It's a love others don't understand because they're not a fan, and you almost pity them for what they've missed out on.

I like this.

I've only seen one football game at Kent -- in 1994, the weekend before the wheels came off the truck against Central Michigan.

I recall shaking the hand of an old time Kent State fan on my way out of the stadium. It's the only decent thing to do.

Just imagine this post filled with funny emoticons.....

Thanks for the compliments. My support of the team hasn't changed. I try to listen to the games in my studio - this is complicated by the fact WBGU can't simu-cast the football and Bball games on-line. Now let me inform everyone that the last home game I was able to attend (due to my schedule, two active sons who are athletes, Mrs. Tech's schedule of stuff, and being self-employed) was homecoming when we smashed Ball State...... prior to that..... I can't tell you. I don't even know what year that was? See my comments below about the last 12 years. (Sam started sports at age 5 and Nicholas at age 4)

FWIW - I travel with my laptop so I can work a few hours here and there - even when I come to BG overnight to watch hockey.

I will tell you - with only a few exceptions, we have made a hockey game about every year. Nicholas was probably about 9 months old when I took him to his first game. Talk about a dry spell.

(TG Listen up - you're headed for this...... ask 87) Just to give you all an idea of my standard Saturday - for the last 12 years. I get up and start working in my office. I stop to run one or both boys to their soccer/basketball/football/indoor soccer/cross country/track meet. This can take from 2 hours to all weekend (soccer tournments with the select teams). I get home god knows when and if I am lucky - catch some of whatever game I can watch. The last two years have been a little easier with Sam in High School. He has to take the bus to his CC/Track events and I can show up for the 20 minutes (out of the 4 hour event) that he runs.

Note to all - I go to EVERY activity, with a few exceptions, my boys are in.... Sam has requested we not travel to watch him run...... but either Mrs. Tech or I usually travel to see him run. Both boys were active in Cub Scouts and Boys Scouts also. Toss that committment in my time. BTW - Sam has achieved Eagle Scout and will have his Court of Honor this weekend - that will cut into my "BG Fan Time". Further note to all - Nicholas has a football game the next two Saturdays and there is a good chance I won't hear/watch the BG game....... Sorry - my bad.

I am really happy to see folks who can be the Uberfan for BG - me, I have lots of things I have to take care of..... but every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I am wearing my school pride. Everyone who knows my boys from sports knows we are BG fans.

Getting to BG for a game is .... well..... it's a luxury. This weekend when I watch Sam get his Eagle rank - I'll know that while BG might have suffered not having me in the stands at every home game, I achieved more by spending my time with my kids.

Furthermore - I know TG still loves me - he's just doing his duty to give me crap

And to end this post..... Mrs. Tech told me to make reservations for Nov 2 and 3 in BG just before she left for work....... meaning I'll be taking names during the games to verify Uberfan status has been maintained by certain posters.

Bullshit. That's BO's job. :-D

And outside the heat of the moment, I see what you're saying about the time and effort, etc. to make a weekend out of a BG trip, but I hold true to my statement. Your post just came at the time where I had a minute of free time at work during the mass exodus of "fans" for the season.

The second post was a direct result of Chicken Little's comments.

Ed,

With a 4pm kick this year, we'll be heading over early to set up in the East Lot. To clarify, this lot faces the home side of Dix Stadium...not over by the indoor facility. Weather looks promising... If anyone wants to stop at the house after the game, PM me or respond here. We have a pretty busy weekend so it won't be like years past but we'll definitely be back by 8 and watching college ball the rest of the evening.

We can grill whatever anyone wants. I know some folks will have big distances to drive so it's no BiG deal is ya can't stop by.

GO FALCONS

Just to add some bitching, this was by far the worst trip I have ever made for a BG game, and it wasn't even that far of a drive. Took all sorts of crap from my parents and aunt and uncle at the game, which sucked. My wife actually read a book in the stands. The day didn't start out very well either. If you were in the lot early, you probably heard me pull in. Dang car was making some awfull noise. Tried to drive home, made it just outside Oxford on 27south when the engine started smoking. Pulled off, waited 2 hours for a tow truck (Luckily my grandparents are nearby and stayed with them). Worked on the car a little bit at the NAPA store grandpa works at and decided to drive home. Made it home, and it was like a movie, the car literally fell apart and started smoking when I pulled in the drive way. So as I type this, I watched the tow truck load my car and take it to the shop.

Other crappy stuff. 1: I missed the biggest game in UK football. Got some radio coverage, but I missed a bunch due to towing the car. Not going to even bother next week with the BG game. Gameday is coming to town. I think I spend the day at Commonwealth stadium.

2: The kids were left at home with a sitter. Wasn't supposed to be too bad of a night. Home by 9:00 at the latest. Now I'm going to have to send my cousin a big fat check for staying the night, and most of sunday to watch the girls.

It was nice seeing Tech, his wife and nicholas though. :D

I was in Lexington this past weekend. My wife and I did our annual October trip to Keenland. They actually had the game on the tote board. Keeneland was still busy, but it was noticeably less than normal.

Went to Malone's for diiner. People were going crazy. I must have heard the C-A-T-S, CATS, CATS, CATS Chant 100 times.

I was torn about not going to Oxford. Looks like I made the right choice.

Mike, we'll stop by for the pregame tailgate ...

Post by BGSU99 »

then we'll probably head home after the game. Can't wait to see everyone! Seems like a while since the last game we were at (Western Kentucky)!

JoeFalcon -- Great points! I guess it could be worse than having not gone to a bowl game in three seasons! We'll continue to get our season tickets and go to the games regardless of how the season plays out!

That is just insult to injury!!!!!

Good to see PGY again and meet his parents/family.

BTW - I called one of the Miami guys I have season tickets with at half time - he was showing up late. I asked him if he saw the BG Team Bus on his way to Oxford to please direct them to Yager as they have started the game without them.

"Because they're the Falcons, dammit!"
Hey , how can you blame him for possibly reconsidering. He lives about 130 miles away. Thats alot of gas to burn to drive up here to watch a miserable product. I don't fault Tech at all. FWIW Tech, the Hockey game could possibly be a better game to come up for than football. You still got time though.
FalconBoy:
I drove to Oxford from the Cleveland area, which is a HELL of a lot farther than 130 miles...bought FOUR tickets (+$5 handling charge), paid for meals for FOUR people......WHY?....because I'm a BG alum and proud of it....was I happy at the game? Hell no! Who was? But I'll be at Kent and I'll be at BG for the remaining games.... AND....btw I actually GO to the games, not try to sneak in after half time, like some people have bragged about in the past. :(
