Please reference the link Schade posted in a different thread. But here's the gist of it. If three teams tie and are 1-1 versus each other, the next tie breaker is record versus the next best divisional opponent. In this case, let's say Ohio ends up in fourth at 3-3 behind BG, Buffalo, and Miami. (This means Miami beats OU in a couple of weeks.) Buffalo and Miami both would have beaten the fourth place team and we would have lost to them. We would therefore be eliminated and it goes back to head-to-head winner between Buffalo and Miami.
The whole point is that losing to OU, who looks very potentially like the fourth place finisher in the East is going to cost us a shot at the MAC championship. If we beat them, then we have a shot at winning the East outright. Losing to them not only cost us that, but it will also hurt us in the potential three way tie-breaker if they end up finishing fourth.
As it turns out, their game against Temple last night was HUGE. If Temple could have won, then they look like the fourth place finisher. Miami lost to them so they would have been out of the 3-way and it would have come down to the BG-Buffalo winner, which has to be BG to even create the tie-breaker situation.
