Why should I be happy that we lost three games?

I think what sticks in my face more than anything is that we fail to learn from WINNING. There was plenty of evidence throughout the year that we might struggle on defense. Sure we were winning and winning big, but we were letting opposing offenses move the ball on us pretty good. Our coach stated in the press conferences that nothing must be wrong because we're winning, and winning big. Never addressing the quality of opponent and how that allowed some deficiencies to be covered up.

I don't mean to be overtly negative, but it is appearing to be a trend to me, that we don't do well recognizing and fixing our problem areas. With all the talk of the team's psyche when we kicked the onsides kick, what do you think it does for the team's psyche when the coach goes to his press conference and says that everything's perfect because we're winning big. Don't you think that makes them take him a touch less seriously if he comes in and insists they work on something harder during the week?

The bottom line is, BG beat only one team with a winning record (and we could have easily lost that one the way the defense played). The other teams were bottom feeders, and everybody beat up on 'em. It was a fun season watching Omar, the throwing machine, but my ego/pride/bragging right status would have been considerably enhanced if he had been as prolific in the context of a more challenging schedule.

Dude. With that last sentence, you cost justified at least $5 of your college education. Nicely structured.

Another reason why we should not be happy...

Last season we lost two games and won the Mac West. This season we lost three and finished THIRD in the Mac West. This is a step backward, not a step forward. Why oh why would I not be upset for finishing THIRD in the West? Can anyone understand this????????

Because the quarterback had virtually no experience whatsoever prior to the season? Because one of the greatest players in BGSU football history graduated after last season?

Just a couple that immediately spring to mind.
I'm not as cool as Tony Gaver, nor will I ever be.

edit: The quarterback had virtually no experience, anyway. And losing Patton hurt very much.
That's just an excuse. Look what Adrian Peterson and Michael Hart have done. And Michican won the Big Ten with a true freshman QB.

And you don't mention that we had virtually everyone but the QB back on offense. So I had no reason to doubt that our offense would be great, which it was.

Well to be fair, comparing an inexperienced QB to freshman running backs isn't too fair...however the comparison to Henne is valid. However, Henne was able to ride the back of a pretty decent defense this year. If you guys had the depth on the defensive side of the ball, that a lot of the more 'big name' programs are able to get, then the two conference losses could have swung the other way. That's been the one thing that as an outsider I've noticed about BG when they're on the tube. You guys have a few playmakers on that side of the ball, (especially Newson), but the main area where quality depth is needed (the DL), you guys didn't have it, and the offense tended to score fast enough that the D would be on the field longer than it should have been, and in the second half that can begin to catch up with a team.

The second half last night, basically Toledo made adjustments in coverage based upon what was run in the first half...for whatever reason, your coach didn't make any adjustments (ie...give the ball to Pope more), and Toledo was able to capitalize on that extra rotating coverage they were giving themselves by adjusting their scheme. I still believe that defensive depth would have pulled you guys through against NIU.

Wow, no one was mentioning that after the Marshall game.

My thoughts exactly. I think we have the game in perspective. Winning games like that is what would make a good program into a great program. Winning games like that is what the Rockets have done, and we have failed to do. I fail to see how that is out of perspective.
