BGSU vs. South Alabama

Post by MobileBama »

South Alabama's Athletic Director was on the radio this morning and said that he spoke with Bowling Green's AD and that the two school's would have a home and home series in the near future. They will start play in 2009 and won't become Division 1 until 2013. They will be a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

Maybe I misunderstood that, but are you saying South Alabama does not currently have a football team at all?

No, the school just voted on it a month ago. Basketball and baseball do really well so they're hoping that football will too. They will play at Ladd Stadium. They are currently looking for a coach.

In that case, I would hope we would at least get a 2 for 1 in any deal. And the one game there certainly should not be until they are Div I.

This isn't really any different from playing the Western Kentucky's of the world. It's a good trip for our guys and for the fans who get to make the trip down.

True, but South Alabama never had a drunk mailman running around naming other towns.*

Can we at least make sure the first game of this series is at home, so when South Alabama wants to back out of the deal after one year we at least get a home game out of the series?

Love to BG play any of the Alabama teams. Of course, there isn't a South Ala. team to play yet.

Hopefully, it will be one of the first games of the season. Mobile is a 45 min. to one hour drive to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, AL. Some of the finest beaches anywhere. In September, the temp is still hot and the gulf waters avg. 80 degrees.

Just food for thought.

Say, Mobile:

Any buzz down there on what South Alabama joining the Sun Belt in football could mean for the MAC when it comes to the GMAC Bowl?

We love the GMAC Bowl. We value the GMAC Bowl.

Maybe this a discussion for another day -- I'm about to get on a plane for Mobile, and I plan to enjoy myself. But I'm curious if Mobile values the MAC anywhere near as much as we value Mobile.

I'd love to see a MAC/Sun Belt match-up in the GMAC. It's obvious C-USA doesn't deserve all the bowls they get every year.

+1. Besides the fact that the MAC usually drills C-USA. :-D I really dig the GMAC Bowl...and I hope the bowl people have favorable feelings toward the MAC.

Yeah, but can we really justify giving the Sun Belt two?

This year, FAU beat Troy in final game to go to the NO Bowl. Troy finished 8-4 and was left out. Although I believe Troy should have gotten in a bowl game, I don't think the Sun Belt needs 2 bowl games...yet.

Mobile really likes the MAC. The MAC is always happy to come down here and is really pumped about the bowl and the week's events. This bowl game has been a really good one. If the GMAC people were to snub the one conference that's shown so much support from the get go, the GMAC Bowl would become just another money hungry ESPN bowl game. The GMAC Bowl will never see a SEC team, so there's no point in trying to break from tradition.
