Hawaii Bowl??

Post by Warthog »

http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2004 ... ctions.htm

CFN is now predicting us in the Hawaii Bowl against UAB. This doesn't thrill me at all. First, how many fans are going to go to Hawaii for a Bowl game? Second, it is played on Christmas Eve at 7:00 pm. We miss out on national exposure as how many people do you think are watching TV on Christmas Eve evening? Well, it still would be a Bowl game so i would have to be happy about that.

Interesting that they now have Akron in the SVFC. Not sure why the SVFC would want to take Akron over us? We both lost our last game.

Keep in mind that CFN.com is guessing like the rest of us.

That said, it makes sense that the Hawaii Bowl could be that fourth bowl we are looking for.

The WAC has three bowl eliglble teams (Boise State, Fresno State and Texas-El Paso) and three bowls (in Boise, San Jose and Honolulu).

Texas-El Paso just accepted a bid to a non-WAC bowl, in Houston. It looks like Boise State will follow suit by playing in the Liberty Bowl.

That leaves three openings and one team left: Fresno State. (Let's assume Hawaii won't beat Northwestern and Michigan State, which is what Hawaii would need to do to become eligible).

In many ways, the Hawaii Bowl is skunkiest option possible for a penny-pinching non-BCS program like ours in the MAC. The trip alone is likely to eat up much of the $750,000 guarantee. Whatever is left will be eaten by the ticket guarantee. If we think it would be hard to sell tickets to a bowl game in San Jose, imagine the challenge of trying to sell tickets for a game in Hawaii on Christmas Eve.

If Hawaii becomes available, I would expect the MAC ADs to seize the opportunity. But it could be so expensive that it could eat into any profits that remain from our other three games combined.

I'm sure Keon Newson would rather play in Hawaii than quite a few other destinations. But if I'm Paul Krebs or any other MAC AD, I'd probably prefer Boise.

I'd glady take a free flight to Hawaii the day before Christmas. If I can fit some of you in my suitcases I can try to get you there for free too

If Hawaii is our bowl game, I'll bet the band won't make the trip.

Just a hunch.

I dunno...I tried to get on of those guys carrying a "will work for food" sign to clean out my garage. He just wanted me to give him some cash...

No, I don't think Krebs or Brandon should stand on street corners in San Jose, Mobile, Detroit or Las Vegas with signs begging for a bowl bid.
We should get falconboy to do that... 8)

Again, considering how we've lost to MAG games this year, I'll take any bowl game. There are certainly some I'd rather have over others, but like it was stated above....beggars can't be choosers. Right now.....I am begging!

Personally, I think the band would go along (and I'm not just saying this because I'm in it and would adore a free trip to Hawaii  ). Brandon respects the band and recognizes that we are a pretty valuable asset to the team. Besides, we would be an automatic 200+ BG fans, and hella noisy fans at that (y'know, instruments and stuff).

The NCAA will foot the bill for all team players and band members. I was told this by the head band director of Kansas State (in his attempt to recruit me as a Wildcat). I don't think he'd lie about a thing like that since he wanted me to be a part of a winning team and go bowling with the team (oh, look who's laughin now) But I sincerely think that the band would get the chance to go.

It's not as if BGSU is footing our bill to go there. If they were, I don't think we'd go bowling to Hawaii, period.

I'm almost positive this is not the case. BGSU and/or the MAC would have to find a way to pay for it.

Now, I don't mean to cause panic in the band by raising the possibility that a trip to a bowl game in Hawaii may not be possible. I'm sure Krebs wants to make sure the band participates in whatever bowl trip the Falcons are awarded.

But the money is tight. For a game in Hawaii or Mobile or San Jose, the guarantee will be $750,000. Out of that, the university must pay to send the team and anyone else who goes along on the trip. The university must also pay for lodging and meals. And the university and/or the MAC must also cover any required ticket guarantee (for example, the agreement with the Silicon Valley Bowl requires the MAC to guarantee 7,000 tickets. I doubt any MAC team can sell that many for a bowl game out there).

So we'll see. Obviously, I hope the band makes any bowl trip. I believe the band was able to make the trips to Las Vegas and Fresno a decade ago.

But Hawaii is one expensive trip.

Since the bowls aren't NCAA events, I doubt if the NCAA would foot the bill for anything.

A few years back when Michigan State played in Hawaii on New Years day, their band took 30 members with them since it was so expensive. They ended up doing a "random drawing" of veteran members to see who got to go. NCAA does not foot the bill for any bowl games. It is up to the schools to foot the bill. The NCAA tournament for basketball is different and yes everything is paid for by them (again though there is a limit to the number of band members allowed to travel). I don't think the entire BG band would be able to go (unless they paid for themselves). That is the problem with the bowl games, people automatically think that everything is paid for and the schools get all this money for playing in them, when in reality most teams are lucky to break even or turn a small profit from the appearance.

I know that in 1995 when UT played in the Vegas Bowl, the whole band got a week out in Vegas with a $50/day stipend for meals ( or whatever you wanted to use it for!!!) We flew out with the team ( they saved money because they already had the flight chartered and had enough empty seats) and had a few days of practice but most of the time was spent just sightseeing. I think the only reason we got so much time out there is because we flew out with the team. I doubt if you did go to Hawaii, you would get that much time but it would be a great "free" trip. That is one of the benefits of being in the Band!!!!!!

Good Luck on your bowl bid I hope we do get 4 or 5 teams in post season play!!!!

Hey, I'm just telling you guys what I was told.

Besides, I personally don't care what bowl we go to as long as the Band gets a chance to go bowling with the team as well.

lol.

Exhibit A: This thread, as proof that the bandies do all read the football forum.

Drawing 30 random members wouldn't provide very good instrumentation. And plus, it would be cause for much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

BUT... any bowl, even a bowl that causes much grief in the band, is better than no bowl!!!
