Digging around youtube brought back another memory of that day - Purdue's comical intro video.

I remember laughing at most of it, thinking that they should have spent that time preparing for BG.

Thanks for posting that. The interception shown was the one i mentioned earlier. I had my binocs on that play. That player did not have control and the ball hit the ground. Purdue scored right after that.

Typical Big Ten call on that "interception".

One of the best BG games I ever attended....but for me, the 2001 BG-Northwestern game in Evanston was even better. Yeah NW wasn't ranked but that game went back and forth all day and the ending was too crazy with Cole scoring the 2 pt conversion on a reverse to take the lead. J5 put up MONSTER numbers that day...and so did the NW offense. Each team had over 600 yds total offense. Just an unbelievable game...I would pay top dollar to find someone with a copy of that game on tape.

But the Purdue win was sweet...the Boiler fans were talking about a BiG season...possibly a run at a BCS Bowl. And BG ruined it. :-D In the papers the next day, the PU beat writer was ripping PU for losing to BG. I wonder what he thought when he saw OSU only beat BG by 7 a couple weeks later.

That 2003 team is my all time fave team...right ahead of the 1985 team.

We may have ruined their national title hopes as far-fetched as they were, but we didn't ruin their BCS bowl hopes. If they would've won the Big Ten or even finished second they would've gone to a BCS bowl. But they weren't going through the Big Ten with fewer than two loses that year anyway since they had to play at Ann Arbor and at Columbus. That was a very good BG team though, probably the best ever.

The 2003 game against Purdue is still the best game I have ever attended in my life. There is very little video of the game out there, as I go to Purdue & have tried every avenue I know possible to get my hands on some game film. I actually have footage of Sharon's catch on VHS, its from the Gregg Brandon Show the week before we played Oklahoma in 2004. They show BG highlights on a part of that show, including both 4th down conversions as well!

I agree with everyone the Phillips didnt intercept that ball. Not only did I feel like I physically saw him trap it, his body langauge matches that as well. Really calm at first & then the ref points for Purdue ball, and he starts over-exaggerating like he made a great play & gets to the sidelines in a hurry! lol Hey you cant blame the kid.

I actually think the pre-game video was good that year. It gets me fired up & was one of the coolest ones I have seen them put together. Dont forget Purdue DID prepare hard for BG, Tiller & Brandon are friends and know the spread pretty well. I remember all week Tiller saying in the newspaper "WE NEED TO BE READY, but I have no idea how I can express that anymore so that these kids will pay attention." He also mentioned on how BG scored 60+ the week before in the "tune up game" and that PU better not come out asleep. Another tidbit from our local paper is our writer Tom Kubat predicts every game score & called for PU to win 42-3. I remember writing him a letter & ripping him a new one BEFORE the game.

Going back to the pre-game jumbo tron thing, reminds me of one of my favorite moments of that day. Right before BG took the field Bone Crusher was blaring & the team was lining up in the South Endzone. It was my first time seeing BG in person & I was so anxious, I remember looking down & seeing J5 at the front of our team. He had his chin strap undone sitting real lose on his face & he was just slowly nodding his head. I'm telling ya I got the chills & I was so impressed by how confident he looked, I knew something B!G was about to go down!

2 more key points before I end this long AZZ post. Purdue DID go 9-3 that year and made it to the Capital One Bowl which is the next best bowl outside of the BCS. I attended that, which was great but they lost in OT to UGA. Also after Purdue lost to BG, Tiller demanded that they never wear Gold jerseys at home again, so that is the last time Purdue has worn Gold!!! lol

On the front page of Black & Gold illustrated the next day was Sharon's catch. I have had it lamenated & hanging up in my room ever since. I also have an autographed picture of J5 as he's making that throw right next to it. Anyway here is one of the pics I took of the paper, years back to post on here.

Thank you for sharing that video. Around the 2:20 point you can see Cole wipe out a Purdue defensive back on a downfield block.

My wife and I were sitting in the north endzone on the opposite end of the BG fans. The walk out of the game was awesome high- fiving BG fans that i had never met.

Never mentioned in all the reviews on the 2003 Ohio State game is the Ohio State timekeeper running off the clock on BG. I can't believe nothing was ever challenged on this issue since it was so obvious. BG fans in the stands at that game were screaming about the clock management. On BG's comback, after the referee started the clock and BG was lined up, the referee halted the play for an injured Ohio State player at the opposite side of the field from the Ohio State bench, but never stopped the clock! I did not realize until after the game when I was watching a local Columbus channel, that 6 seconds were run off the clock after the clock had been stopped for the last fumble during the unpiling. The announcer said "too bad BG". There was 1:38 left on the clock at the time of the fumble. Ohio State took a 25 second penalty and punted. Although time was put back on the clock after BG received the ball, what happened to the time between 1:38 and 51 seconds other than the 25 second penalty and kick? I am reciting this from memory so those of you with a video replay can confirm the accuracy.

BG71,

That's about as accurate as you can get. We definitely got homered there.

Similar thing happened in '92. BG trailed 17-6 and Erik White hit Mark Szchlachic with a TD pass in the corner of the end zone. Mark had BOTH feet EASILY in the end zone by a good half foot and the official standing right on top of the play waved it out of bounds. Mark just looked up in total disbelief. I have that '92 game on tape as well and you can see it clear as day. There were 13 minutes still left in the game and OSU's offense hadn't done sh*t all day. BG would have been down no more than 17-12 at that point and who knows how that could have ended? It was 7-6 at the half.
