Bowling Green Normals

Post by buffaloefalcon »

Alright, I just opened my 09 NCAA and of course BGSU is my favorite team that floods everything on my XBOX 360 game. At the intro to each game, there's a personal history of each team and BGSU's name started out as the NORMALS! WHAT? Anyone know the story on this one? BOWLING GREEN STATE NORMALS!? They can't even get our _ucken stadium correct! I'm not sure about this one.

It is true. I don't know the exact story behind it, but it's listed in the 2007 Media Guide if you got one. If not I can look it up here in a minute or better yet someone who knows the story by heart can tell it!
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

Yes way back when BG was the Normals... When BG was founded it was founded as what is called a Normal School (for teachers only).... Hence being called the normals....

That's AWESOME! How about proposing a throwback like the other schools to promote some good recruits! Different, but kinda catchy if you ask me. I can't belive that EA delved that deep to find this info out. They even included the fact that we have a long history of playing against the military institutions, which we haven't been partaking in lately, but that's pretty cool! We have a rich history that needs to be promoted more!

FWIW,
Both BG and Kent were "Normal" schools at their beginnings...i.e. teacher training institutions.

I have a picture of the 1917-18 BG Normal Men's Basketball squad in my office.

Prior to being nicknamed the Falcons, BG was known by many different names at different times including the "Normals", the "Teachers" and the "Pedagogues".

Someone asked me a few weeks back if we were ever nicknamed the "Normal Warriors". I'd never heard of that, but maybe someone else with more historical info could weigh in.

As my mother, a fellow UT grad, is prone to saying "UT isn't perfect but at least it was never a Normal school like BG".

Navy has us on their 2009 schedule, btw. Not sure if this was mentioned before.

Let the thread hijacking ensue.

As soon as I get my Luminox 8362 EVO Ultimate SEAL Chronograph, I'm going to buy some of that face paint in orange and brown. Wicked.
