I could not diasgree with you more on this particular topic. I've been attending football games at BGSU for over 25 years. I don't need permission from you nor do I need the players or coaches to act as a proxy if I want to criticize the band for playing when the ball is in play.
No problem with saying it. But be respectful about it or be prepared to be criticized.
However, is it a big deal? I NEVER had my band play when the ball was in play for either team unless there was a situation where we were asked to do so, but is it really ruining the game? What's the difference between loud fans on their feet cheering on a big third down?
No one needs my permission to say that, but to drop it like the rule of God is flat-out wrong. I don't have a problem with saying it in a certain way or questioning it.
6. Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any
noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals (Rule 1-1-6).
is the rule. Could the team NOT hear? if that isn't the case, please can it.
Thank you for proving that you have no idea what we are all talking about. I will not waste time explaining it again. Thank you for everyone that understands about home field advantage. Current band members, keep up the good work and please try and promote a positive home field advantage for our football team. As a long-time BG fan I appreciate what you bring to the game day experience.

Well sure...I can see how you would make that demand ...you've been model of decorum and respect for the views of others in this conversationFalcon30 wrote:No problem with saying it. But be respectful about it or be prepared to be criticized
OU's band sucks...McDonald's sucks...treating the band like a sacred cow sucks...everything sucks but the new ipods....
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Wouldn't it be cool if the band did the "Music of Moses" and performed only music from The Ten Commandments" and for the finale have the flag corp carry out a golden calf? Then as the team comes out, Brandon carries two stone tablets and smashes them over the officials heads. I would pass up going to the bathroom at halftime for that.Flipper wrote:Well sure...I can see how you would make that demand ...you've been model of decorum and respect for the views of others in this conversationFalcon30 wrote:No problem with saying it. I like that steak comes from cows. That is why a cow will not think twice about eating you.
You do realize that when YOUR team has the ball you should not be making noise correct? You should give your team quiet so that they can call audibles and whatnot.Falcon30 wrote:No problem with saying it. You make noise when the opposing team has the ball. Band, crowd, whatever, should not be making noise when the home team has the ball, that's the point.

You're right- those are sensitive waters. I was in the band 6 (and 7 and 8) years ago and don't particularly enjoy being told we couldn't carry a tune and were terrible. In my humble opinion, both of things are absolutely not true. Things have gotten better since Dr. H came on board, but we were still a great band during that time. The Niz wrote:redskins4ever wrote:Today's Falcon Marching Band cannot hold a candle to that of the one in the 80's, and the fact that anyone could claim that today's band is one of the best in the nation must only be considering the top 1000 college bands in the country, and then you could say its in the top 90%.
These are sensitive waters...
Although I have my disagreements with Dr. Hayward from time to time, I do respect the fact that she has somehow brought the band back from the dead. Six years ago the band could not hold a tune much less be warranted with the kind of credit some people are giving us. Consider the kind of progress that has been made, its gone from terrible, to top of the class (just my humble opinion) in only five years. If our football team had that kind of progress we would be cheering them on at the rose bowl soon.
There is so much more to add to this, but I fear my ignorance greatly outweighs that which I actually know on the matter, so in the words of RD Mathey, I'm gonna put the puppy to bed.
I agree with Saxy- I wish I hadn't opened this thread.....

This has been my point all along, and for some reason I do not think that some people understand that. You get the response, like it only happens every once in awhile and we had to finish our song, blah, blah. STADIUM SHOULD BE DAMN NEAR SILENT WHEN OUR TEAM HAS THE BALL AND IS AT THE LINE CALLING PLAYS. For the non-football people on here, the reason for this (beyond common sense) is that BG runs an offense that calls plays at the line after making reads of the opposing defense, thus at home shoudl expect it to be fairly quiet and not having an entire marching band screaming during the wave, or horns and drums playing 50 yards from them. Ok, I am finished on this topic. Now begin akward defense of the band.

hammb, with all due respect, if the players and coaches have no problem with the band playing up to the snap why do you?hammb wrote: You do realize that when YOUR team has the ball you should not be making noise correct? You should give your team quiet so that they can call audibles and whatnot.
I am simply flummoxed by the nay-sayers who have zero ground to stand on. If the coaches and team would have had a problem with how the band plays it would have been stopped at the request of the A.D. But yet that hasn't happened.
This has turned into a pathetic circle-jerk. I'm through with this thread.

Well, for starters I don't think the team or coaches have complained, because I don't think it's really an epidemic problem. I noticed it once, and mentioned it. I guess I should not have. I honestly don't think it was that big of a deal, but it was something that came to my mind that was frustrating from the game.Rightupinthere wrote:hammb, with all due respect, if the players and coaches have no problem with the band playing up to the snap why do you?hammb wrote: You do realize that when YOUR team has the ball you should not be making noise correct? My point still stands though. You should not be making noise when our team is coming out of the huddle. Again, this is not limited to the band, it includes everyone else in the stands to. It's part of being an intelligent football fan; knowing when to make noise and when not to. I don't think this is a major recurring issue that is in dire need of repair, but I don't think every one of you band alums should be defending it to the death either. I love the band, and I love our fans, but I also love our team. When they have the ball the place should be silent. When we're on defense it should be loud.
Not trying to get into this debate either way...however, I think I have seen the KKK on t.v. before...does that make them good too?Falcons4Life wrote:Hey FOOTBALL boy....who was just on national TV.....oh yeah, that group that you hate!
The BAND! They suck!
and just to clarify, I like the band. I don't, however, like lame arguments.

I agree with you. But it was clearly a small error and not some sort of insult to Jesus or the NCAA. I get upset too easily. It's a character flaw. But you can not defend this holier than thou "the band should NEVER play when the team has the ball" stuff.hammb wrote:Well, for starters I don't think the team or coaches have complained, because I don't think it's really an epidemic problem. It isn't an NCAA rule, as far as I have found it isn't a MAC rule. It is a courtesy thing and if it doesn't bother the players or coaches, is it really an issue?

There is no excuse for the wave thing. lame, lame, lame. it was passe' when I was in school.
But your criticism was STILL over the top and insulting.
Period.
Classless. I am ashamed to be a BG fan today. You can't show a little respect to a fellow fan. You can't show any respect to the hard work the band does. Hammb has taken a respectful tone in this and all you want to do is insult people and belittle the work and effort of everyone else who isn't on the team. You make foolish assumptions, and you preach to the world like you are some sort of football god declaring the absolute rules of fandom.
Your opinion carries no more weight than mine, and yours happens to be mostly baseless...and you have shifted off of your original bogus argument that the band thinks it somehow is the focus of attention, when it simply isn't true. You started out hyperbolic and now went into "what I really meant was" mode.
You owe the band an apology. You took your insult too far.

Again, I must ask, have you asked or talked to any of the players or coaches to know it doesn't bother?Falcon30 wrote: It is a courtesy thing and if it doesn't bother the players or coaches, is it really an issue?
