Agree that we need to do more financially to keep quality coaches "home", but where the heck did Boise come up with THAT kind of money?windycityfalcon wrote:http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1940680

I think ESPN created Boise State. There was no university in Boise until Fox Sports landed the cable rights to the PAC 10 games on Saturday night. Left with nothing to broadcast, ESPN creates this odd little university with a stadium that has blue turf (what were Corso and Fowler and Herbie smoking THAT night"?) so they have something to show on Saturday nights other than poker

The point that a lot of us are missing in all of this is how attendance and merchandising money play into this. Sure, when you walk around campus there's a ton of BG stuff, but intermingled are Michigan and OSU shirts, etc. People have grown up with these teams because of the ralative location and the ease with which they can access games and suvenirs of these teams. Bowling Green has to compete with two of the most - if not THE most - well followed schools in the country. Boise State, Utah, etc. don't have this to compete with and there's enough of a population base in Salt Lake city that BYU and Utah can afford to split the population's loyalty.
Now, merchandise does something for that, but there's no way we'll be able to compete with the deep-seeded and well-canvased merch of the big schools. This means the program doesn't have as much money and therefor cannot AFFORD to pay a coach like Brandon by the same standards of other colleges.
The other obvious factor in not being able to pay the coaches as much as we'd like to keep them around is attendance. The higher the ticket sales, the more money we make. The more money we make, the more we can pay our coaching staff. Granted, we do a lot better than a lot of MAC schools, but we're working out of a wind tunnel in one of the coldest cities in Ohio during late fall/early winter. Toledo can pull it off because of proximity to the dorms and the total enclosure of the glass bowl.
Without the ticket sales/visual evidence of support, we'll never be able to put up the money for a long term coach.
I know there were plans for a new athletic complex that would serve as an enclosure and make things a bit more cozy, but if you were the coaching staff, how long would you stick around for that?
I don't want to be a pessamist, but this may be an uphill battle we can't win.

If you wanna feel funky, feel free. Just please don't spread that funk on me!
You don't WANT to be a pessimist, but you do an awful good job of it.thedrum wrote: I don't want to be a pessamist, but this may be an uphill battle we can't win.
Not saying that the "uphill battle" is easy, and everyone might have a different definition of "winning", but its a battle worth fighting for small victories at a time.
While the UM/OSU/ND/etc argument is pretty much equine abuse around here anymore, if anyone gives into it with an "eh, its there, we have to accept it" mentality, then the battle WILL NOT be won. But, if every student grabs a roommate from in front of the TV to get to the Doyt, and if people in Wood County grab their neighbor away from whatever game is on TV to watch BG play live, its a start.
There needs to be (if there isn't already) logical goals set, and everyone from the team to the marketing department to the students to the other fans need to recognize this and do their part to make it a successful product.
Lots of factors in play here.
Boise certainly owns its market and BG is in some pretty tall shadows. Can't deny that. That allows Boise to squeeze more money out of marketing opportunities, too.
And let's not forget the product on the field. BG's had a nice run the last few years, but Boise is 36-2 over the last three years. Yeah, there's just a bit of a difference there. If Brandon can post those types of numbers, I'm willing to be the university would pony up some additional cash, that is if he doesn't get scooped up by a bigger school first.

Very well said TG. It CAN happen here too if we all do our part.TG1996 wrote:You don't WANT to be a pessimist, but you do an awful good job of it.thedrum wrote: I don't want to be a pessamist, but this may be an uphill battle we can't win.
