I wish that he went by "David" instead of "Dave" so that his name would be more chantable (a la "Ur-ban Mey-er").
GC clearly didn't think this out very well.

It would definitely be a great move if he did. Anytime a coach of one sport attends events and roots for another sport it's a good thing. Students and other fans love to see that sense of pride and spirit that a move like that displays.

This is a home run. A flat out home run.

He's a winner, and it hasn't come from cushy, built-to-win situations or watching other people do it from a distance while coaching a position group. He's rolled up his sleaves and gotten the job done as a head coach at a high level twice. Ohio recruiting experience? Just extensive ties to the Cleveland and Cincinnati Catholic school programs and a commitment to hire a staff that knows the state inside and out. The Tennessee situation? He tried to radically change an offense with marginal talent against the fastest defenses in the country in a matter of months, so no, it wasn't perfect. And the Wyoming game comparison cheap shot people have thrown out there occured the week of Fulmer's emotional resignation after 30+ years at the school, so forgive them if their heads weren't exactly into football at that point in time. He's a flexible and innovative offensive mind, a prerequisite for success both on the field of play and in winning over the bandwagon fans who want to be entertained.

Not to go all John Sununnu, but as a bit of a coaching nerd, I can say "trust me" on this one. This is a better get then many of the other hires that have been made in this cycle. Think of a younger, less abrasive Brian Kelly.

NIU improved their win total by 4 games after hiring a ultra-successful I-AA coach. We get the same thing only with SEC coordinator experience, so it's an exciting time to be a Falcon football fan.

I'm excited to see who he brings in to fill out his staff.

I can't remember being so excited about such things. . . ever? I guess since he has previous HC experience, was in the SEC, and is highly regarded (supposedly in the mix in Oxford, potential coordinator opportunities at other BCS schools) I'd like to see who he can tap to bring in.

Just an FYI...the 'BCS coordinator' opportunity Clawson was talking about was at Syracuse under their new head coach Doug Marrone, the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints.

The SU fans were clamoring for him and were quite disappointed to learn we had scooped him up.

My guess is he was cheap. Not sold on his resume but if can keep his players out of jail, he will have an up on Brandon.

Really?

Off the top of my head I'd say he is probably the most qualified head coach we have hired in my lifetime. At the very least he is arguably the most qualified in the previous four hires (Brandon, Meyer, Blackney, Ankney).

My observations of the press conference/first impressions of Coach Clawson:

1. Excellent communicator with the public. Speaks very well- with or without notes.
2. Realizes the value of family. Realizes the values of "family" in football.
3. Doesn't just say the right thing- represent the univeristy in first class manner and graduate. Two goals he has for every BG football player- a championship ring and a degree. He didn't just say it, he meant it.
4. This guy has led teams and won. And won big at times.
5. Recognized immediately that he is coaching in the number one (or nearly so) state for HS football. Essentially opened his remarks with this concept.
6. Has no preconceived notion of an offensive "system". Examine and evaluate the talent and let players make plays from whatever "system" fits. Mentioned he has had teams be big passing teams and others be big running teams.
7. Rose to the top of good group of candidates partly with his football CEO plan to bring BG to the top.
8. Exudes confidence but not arrogance.
9. Looked very good in orange cap.

At the first period break, in the Falcon Club lounge, I asked if he would be making an appearance. I was told that they had hoped he could, but he would not be able to due to meeting with recruits. I know that is a good thing, but it would have been awesome to introduce him to that crowd!! Would have been a great welcome to BG!!!

That's too bad he couldn't be there, but at the same time, completely understandable. I do hope he turns out to be one of those kinds of coaches who does support the other athletics on campus too, not just acting as though his sport is the only one that matters. But as he seems like a great, stand-up kind of guy, I would not be surprised in the least to see him show up at some other sporting events.

A Toledo TV station said last night that he could make up to $400,000/year after incentives. That is not cheap for the MAC.
