Six Falcons Earn Academic All-MAC Status

Cody Basler, Craig Rutherford and Jimmy Scheidler earn top Academic Award; Three other named Honorable mention.

Dec. 19, 2008

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced their 2008 Academic All-MAC teams this afternoon (Dec. 19) with six members of the Bowling Green State University football team capturing the award. Cody Basler, Craig Rutherford and Jimmy Scheidler were named to the Academic All-MAC Team, while Nick Iovinelli, Marques Parks and Sinisa Vrvilo were honorable mention.

Basler played in all 12 games this season, making two starts. In one of those starts he had six tackles, a fumble recovery (for a touchdown) and picked off one Wyoming pass in the Falcons' 44-16 win over the Cowboys. He finished the year with 42 tackles.

Iovinelli was recently honored by the MAC after being named to the third-team earlier this year. He averaged 40.4 yards a punt, while placing 12 punts inside the opponents' 20 yard-line.

Rutherford served as the team's long snapper on field goals and extra points. He currently maintains a 4.0 grade-point average.

Parks made 10 starts this season and saw action in all 12 games. His best game came versus Wyoming where he had five receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown. He finished the season with 19 receptions for 248 yards and four scores.

Scheidler had a breakout season in 2008, leading all MAC tight ends with seven touchdown receptions. In the season opener versus Pittsburgh the junior had three catches for 30 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the year with 17 receptions for 150 yards.

Vrvilo converted on nine of 16 field goals and 41 of 43 extra points in his senior year. He had season-long makes of 44 yards at Akron and Wyoming. He added six touchbacks on kickoffs in 2008.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Congrats to all!!
