Are things actually getting better? more level?

Post by Globetrotter »

I was thinking about tonights game and the fact that both of these teams kept their coaches. Both TCU and Boise have had consistent success but have been able to hang on to their coaches. Is this a sign of things changing for the future or just an oddity due to their subjective circumstances. The Biggest jobs available were Auburn, Tennessee, Washington, Clemson, Kansas State, Mississippi State, Purdue and Syracuse. All BCS teams. Yet Utah's,TCU's, Boise State's and even Cincinnati's coaches remained untouched for another year after having steady success. BYU's should probably get mentioned here as well.

Purdue had already handpicked their new coach so we can take them off the list. Tennessee and Washington both hired high profile assistants so they are off too. Kansas State returned to a legacy coach so they are off too. That leaves Auburn, Clemson, Miss State and Syracuse.

Maybe to a successful developing program Syracuse and Miss State are considered lateral moves. That leaves Clemson and Auburn. Clearly these two are are steps up for any of those 5 candidates. I know that TCU's coach interviewed at Auburn. Auburn and Clemson eventually went with known commodities.

My question is was it a case of not enough jobs for candidates and these guys and they will eventually move on when the right job finds its way to them (with more and more teams naming the successor to their current hc that seems like an intriguing future development). Or was it a case of these candidates feeling at home in their current environment for whatever reason and deciding to stay and make their mark on their current school? Are we seeing a situation developing where a very good head coach could choose to stay at BG and watch us develop, or should we expect success and sayonara?

Boise is an awfully hard environment to walk away from. Any coach would be hard pressed to leave a place where they have built the longest home winning streak in the country.

I do think however that we may be seeing a new trend in some coaches around the country. Instead of jumping on the BCS boat to make their name, some of them may be trying to be the first to accomplish the impossible and take a "mid-tier" program to the big show. Boise almost got there, and many feel they deserved to go there, their coach only got a sniff of what he really wanted for his program.

Its really exciting to think coaches like Doyt Perry who have total program loyalty are starting to appear again.
Yeah right girl!

It would be nice to have it happen at BG!
As it is now, BGSU, and most of the MAC, is a solid stepping stone and viewed that way within the coaching ranks. I don't see it changing soon.

Cincinnati is a program that will steadily drift upward. It would be nice to see OSU play them in the Bengals' stadium within the next ten years.

Isn't Boise State's coach fairly new? The other guy and his son are at Colorado and the main assitant went to BYU-right? This has to be within the last 3 years.
Either that or time REALLY doesfly when you are having fun. :?

You are correct this was only Peterson's 3rd season as head coach at Boise State. Dan Hawkins was the head man before that.

The top non-BCS schools pay as well as the lower level BCS schools, and you have a better chance for success at schools like BSU or Utah. Urban was smart, he parlayed in his success at BG and Utah for a premier job. He had all the resources imaginable to succeed. Schools like Miss St. and Kan. St. and others in that position are middle of the road teams. They will never be able to compete on a regular basis with the top teams of their conference. Look at next year Mizzou will be taking a few steps back. If BG wants to keep a coach, you need to find someone like Toledo Tom, who's dream job it is to coach BG.

There is a guy like that - BG is Brian Rock's dream job. Brian grew up in BG and was a Grad Assistant under Denny Stolz. He was the OC at WMU, before latching on with Purdue where he is the receivers coach. Rock is 50 years old and smart as a whip. I would love to see him land the BG job sometime soon.

Maybe an outside possibility of being Clawson's OC here?

Niz, I agree. In my eyes Boise already got there though. Their win over Oklahoma 2 years ago. They proved right then and there that the so-called "little guys" can hang with AND BEAT the "big boys".
