I was an "Air Force brat" back in the mid-60's, and the last base my dad was stationed at was about an hour from Memphis. Memphis provided the culture and fine dining that rural Arkansas could not.
We went to quite a few Memphis State (when did the name change?) football games. The best game by far was witnessing Memhis State's first victory ever over Ole Miss in 1967. Billy Murphy was the coach then, and the fans went crazy after the 27-17 victory. The 0-21-1 drought was over.
The city of Memphis took its name from the city of Memphis in Egypt. Because of its link to Egypt, the University of Memphis now has arguably the finest collection of Egyptian art in the United States. It is housed at the U. of Memphis Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology. I only mentioned this because my step-mother-in-law donated some rare Egyptian artifacts to the museum in the early 1990's.
Good luck to both teams.

You must've been at Blytheville Air Force Base in Blythevill, Arkansas. It's about an hour to the northwest of Memphis.
Unfortunately the defense cuts in the 90s resulted in that facility being closed. It also pretty much shut down the Millington Naval Air Station which is just outside of Memphis.
BTW, my dad was a pilot during Viet Nam. In 69 we were at Wright-Pat which is where my sister was born. Seeing how I was 4 I don't remember much at all.

Speaking of the Memphis-Egypt relationship, don't forget The Pyramid right there on the Mississippi. This is where the Grizzlies and the Tigers had played before the Forum just opened up. My gf up here at BG is from Germantown, TN, so I've gotten to see the good things Memphis has to offer many times now. Jeff

Memphis is a very good place to visit. I'm fortunate enough to be required to attend an annual meeting in downtown Memphis. The nightlife and food are outstanding.
The Rendezvous is a must for the ribs but there are many other good places to eat. Texas DeBrazil has an outstanding selection of beef, pork and chicken.
If you like live music, Beale Street probably has something for you. There is also Mud Island, The Pyramid, Graceland, and the new Grizzlies arena in downtown. Tunica, MS is only about 35 minutes away and has a number of casinos. (Maybe I could take a 2nd job promoting tourism in Memphis).
The people of Memphis are a good group. I've noticed that the Tiger fans who post on this board have been classy.
Let's hope for a good game and a Falcon victory in the GMAC Bowl.
Go BG !!

Memphis, AKA The Bluff City and The City of Good Abode, is definitely a Southern town is just about every aspect.
We Memphians pride ourselves on our Southern hospitality.
Sure, we have our problems, but all big cities do.
I can personally guarantee anyone who visits will have a wonderful time.
