Lou West to Indiana State

Post by orangeandbrown »

Its official, Lou West is now head coach at Indiana State. Looks like new coordinators for UT, if Spence leaves.

My first reaction: This isn't a sexy move. Seems almost lateral. Was he being eased out?

But the more I think about it, maybe he's doing okay for himself. Better title. He might get a slight pay hike, too.

Doesn't Indiana State play in the Gateway? That's one of the best I-AA leagues. It isn't like he is taking a job at Dayton or Butler.

The guy deserves better than that, IMO.

Just doesn't seem right that a DC from one of the MAC's most successful programs would have to go to I-AA to get a head coaching position.

Well, their defense wasn't that good though.

That's right. Article says he's fifty, can't necessarily wait forever if he wants to be a head coach.

Lets be fair, he is going from Little Detroit to lead a 1AA program. So at least the school is a step up from where he came from.

West had that defense playing pretty solid ball by the end of the year. Spence is the guy that should be getting offers.

and Terre Haute is like Little Detroit II... I've only driven through a small section of it, and some of it was pretty rough around the edges, but I've heard stories that it's not exactly Pleasantville...

Nathan:

I think Freak is spot on here. The Rockets started a lot of young guys this year and West had them ready when the deal went down. Is he a "hot" prospect? No. But he's the DC at a program that's won a lot of games while he's been there.

There was some buzz for a bit that Beckman was a candidate for the Western job. Now we have a good team and all, but I wouldn't exactly say we made our name on defense, yet he was in the running for a D-I HC job.

Just seems odd that you'd have to step back to I-AA to get a shot at a I-A HC job later.

Remember there are very few black head coaches in D-IA football. If he wants to be a D-IA head coach, he knows where he must go to "prove himself" to those who make the decisions.
