BG to D-II?
BG to D-II?
Interesting comments from President Cartwright regarding the options of BG athletics.

I think this note answers the DII question.
(In an e-mail Saturday morning, he said, that dropping football and moving to Division II were considered, but will not be implemented.)

BG/Division II
I wanted to pass along a note to the Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba community concerning the notion of Bowling Green dropping its athletic programs to NCAA Division II or dropping the football program. It was reported tonight on Toledo news, attributing the Sentinel-Tribune article, that BG is considering these options in an attempt to balance the budget. I want to comment on this in no uncertain terms -- it is just not true.
Athletic Director Greg Christopher mentioned both of those options almost two months ago in his Ask the AD segment so this is not a recent happening. As with any difficult issue, many options are usually put on the table as to how it can be solved. In this case, both of those options were put on the table months ago and quickly dismissed as options that Bowling Green State University does not want to consider. We are completely committed to the MAC and the MAC requires that we field teams for football, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball. Eliminating football or moving to Division II was never given serious consideration by the University's leadership. This was quickly eliminated as an option.

On a side note, I just want to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed my first five months here at BGSU. I have found that BGSU fans are intelligent and passionate sports fans and I wouldn't want it any other way. It's been great to observe and take in BGSU athletics over the past five months as I've gotten accustomed to the department and gotten to know many people. If you ever have any ideas on how we, in athletic communications/sports information, can do our job better or keep you better informed, please feel free to drop me an e-mail at [email protected].
Thank you!

Jason, thanks for the comments. The fact that the Pres. and AD still listed shifting the program to D-II as an option during an April 21 news interview tells me that the idea has not been eliminated. I know that they are looking at every way to clean up the athletic and university budget shortfalls, but if the D-II option was taken off the table months ago why bring it up in public now?

Because somewhere, some time, some one is going to say "Why hasn't the university looked at dropping to D-II?"rally wrote:Jason, thanks for the comments. As Greg Christopher has stated, we reviewed that option and have decided that it is not a solution to the problem and they are not willing to entertain it any further.
It tells me that particular option is no longer being considered, even on April 21, 2009.

Moving to D-II would be crippling to BGSU….my gosh I don’t even want to think about the possibility of ever facing that decision. I support my university in many ways on many levels, but if it were to ever drop to D-II, my ties would be cut from the university in a heartbeat. I back BG in many ways, bit this would be one area I would have to take a personal stand. I have personally invested way too much time, money and effort in supporting BGSU athletics since stepping foot on campus in 1993 to watch us fall from D-I. From all the road trips, to attending games, to buying season tickets, to traveling to bowl games, to attending the MAC Tournaments, etc., - there’s just no way I could ever stomach the thought, let alone the move, to D-II. Can you even image BG being on the same level as Ashland or Central State?! Hell no! I love BG being D-I. I love BG being in the MAC. I can't even image going to the Doyt or the Stroh Center for a D-II game. Anything less than D-I for BG and I’ll be looking for a new school to devote myself to.
GO BG!!!
GC has made it clear that all options have been on the board, from Stroh Center finalized plans to hockey plans to athletic department vision. It doesn't mean that any of the options are being taken seriously, but they at least talk about them to give good reason why they are not options.
My guess at that conversation between any two people:
"How about we talk about dropping all sports to 1-AA? Just saying, it would save some money and keep the sports all intact."
"Are you stoned? Next topic."
"OK, at least we talked about it."

S-T Article
I thought of BG dropping to D2 or Dropping football is just plain stupid. The program has long sense been a source of pride for the university.
Also the S-T need to get it facts straight, there are currently Five (5) D2 Schools in Ohio, Ashland & Central State as Mentioned, But Also Findlay, Tiffin & Lake Erie College, Also Ohio Dominican should be D2 in a year. Nice work by the sport editor. how do you miss Findlay & Tiffin?

Lake Erie isn't officially div.II yet. They are still a provisional member.IronFalcon77 wrote:I thought of BG dropping to D2 or Dropping football is just plain stupid. The program has long sense been a source of pride for the university.

This happens in Universities all the time
After reading the other posts it is obvious that some people do not understand the process that goes on at universities. Any time a budget situation comes up there is a brain storming session held. Also sorts of weird ideas are thrown out and usually 90 percent of them are not followed through. Give BGSU adminstration credit for some brains knowing that dropping to Division II would not be in the best interests of the university.

But it's so much more fun to run around spreading rumor and half-truths...kentuckianacoach wrote:After reading the other posts it is obvious that some people do not understand the process that goes on at universities.
