Losing to Marshall, 12-10 in 1971 was a hard one to take. It was one of only two games Marshall won all year, following the plane crash that killed almost the entire team the year before. If Marshall hadn't beaten Xavier earlier in the year, Bowling Green might have been the "villains" everyone was cheering against in the "We Are Marshall," film a couple of years back. We actually had a decent team in '71, but we sure didn't do much that day.
"No, it's NOT in Kentucky!"

We got our revenge in 1998. Marshall rode into Perry Stadium undefeated at 8-0 while BG was slogging along at 2-5. Game started at noon so I was tailgating by 9. There were as many Marshall fans as BG in the 11,000 crowd. I taped the game but the tape quality isn't great.

But everything went BG's way. Our running game with Adam Lige and Brent Martin ran all over the Herd and Kurt Gerling had a huge day. Bob Niemet had probably his best day as a BG QB. I have a decent copy on vhs but it isn't great. I kept looking up at the scoreboard in the 4th quarter in disbelief...our defense just kept coming up with one BiG stop after another.

Marshall left town with their first loss, 34-13. For one week during those darker days of Gary Blackney, BG was king again.

Of course the 56-35 azz whoopin we put on them in 2004 was fun, too. :-D
