Well, he said it...and since it was 2008 when he said it, I was figuring "this" year referred to the 08/09 class and "next" year referred to the 09/10 class.

Noticed that Kent lost FIVE Schol. from FB and that OSU lost TWO schol. from basketball, allegedly due to last two 7 fters leaving school early... hasn't OSU had a number of FB players ALSO leave early, though not as many as they used to have?

APR

The newest APR scores were released yesterday, so I would guess that they were not previously known.

They were known, not just released.

one last year, Gholston but if he earns his degree through the continuing ed program in the NFL it doesn't count against OSU. I don't think the NBA offers this. I think it is up to the players themselves to come back in the summer to continue/finish school.

I know this is beating a dead horse but this is still the dumbest rule in college athletics especially when it comes to football and basketball. The ncaa allows the players to leave or transfer but they punish the schools if they do. If the NCAA is going to punish the school for something out of their control then they need to not allow transfers in the middle of the season (anthony Crater) or they need to require the player stay in school all 4years. If they don't, they pay back their scholarship.

Here's an article from the ST today:

Even though Bowling Green was listed as losing eight football scholarships due to poor Academic Progress Rate scores from the NCAA, the Falcons' athletics department said in a statement that the penalty has already been served.

"Overall, we are pleased with our APR scores," said BG athletics director Greg Christopher. "Our scores are higher than other institutions that we view as our peers. Our academic services department, led by Mark Shook, is doing a fantastic job giving our student-athletes an opportunity to succeed in the classroom. Our athletic department GPA (grade point average) of 3.02 is higher than the general student body GPA at Bowling Green and our NCAA graduation success rate is the highest in the MAC.
"Our student-athletes should be commended for the way they balance their academic and athletic commitments."

The scores are calculated based on data from the fall semester in 2004 through the spring semester in 2008. Each athlete receives one point per semester for being academically eligible and another point each semester for remaining at that school or graduating.

A formula is used to correlate a final team score, with 1,000 points being perfect. Teams that fall below 925 annually can be subjected to immediate penalties. Those consistently falling below 900 face harsher sanctions. Overall 177 teams were penalized by the NCAA, with football and men's basketball accounting for 76 teams,

Bowling Green had a 920 score for football. "As for football, I see the penalties as a one-time occurrence," Christoher said. "We saw this coming, so we served the penalty by reducing scholarships a year ago. The football program has never fallen below the APR cutline before and our score is more a reflection of attrition from the program than on poor academic performance.

"The APR score is based on a four-year average and it just happened that we had a high score drop off this year and it was replaced with a year in which we lost some student-athletes. We expect to see improvement next year."

By taking the reduced scholarship penalty for the 2008 season, Bowling Green will not be required to reduce scholarships for 2009.

I just received this clarification email from the SID office:

Grant,

Since there seems to be some confusion regarding the football team's APR score and the loss of eight scholarships, I thought I'd send you an e-mail that you can post or relay on AZZ.com. As some remember from a press conference earlier in the fall, Greg Christopher talked about the APR issues of the football program. According to Ryan Squire, our Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, the athletic department knew approximately how many scholarships we would be losing as far back as May of 2008. Even though the APR report just came out this week, the football team took the reduced scholarship penalty for the 2008 season. This penalty is a one year reduction and it has been fulfilled. The poor APR score was mostly due to players leaving the program for one reason or another and not poor academic performance. As we knew a year ago approximately what our APR score was, we also know what the APR score looks like for next year. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, this should be a one-time offense and we won't be discussing this issue again next year.

Thanks!

Would kicking a DT off the team (on top of two other DT's perhaps in jail by now) qualify as "extenuating circumstances"? Whether this was a ONE time deal or not, it still looks pretty bad from a P. R. standpoint.

Actually 8 scholarships seems to be the worst on the list (with the possible exception of the championship ban).

The .03 reduction of a scholarship is kind of funny. "We can offer you a 97% scholarship. You have to come up with the last fifty bucks."
