If we pull the upset Saturday ...

Post by MarkL »

So I was thinking, if the Falcons play the best game they can Saturday and pull the upset, where would it rank among the upsets that have already happened? So far, I think the biggest upset of the season has got to be Washington over USC, and then BYU over Oklahoma behind that. Other big upsets include Miami over GT, FSU over BYU, and Michigan over ND. Would BGSU over Boise St. be below the top two, in between, or even higher than those two, making such an upset the biggest upset of the season?

Pull back on the reins for one second there. Michigan over Notre Dame was one of the top "upsets" of the season so far? Great finish? Yes. Upset? Not a chance. All we saw in that was that Notre Dame isn't as good as everyone thought they were when they won in week 1. I'm sorry, but Michigan has improved and Notre Dame hasn't done anything. So let's rethink our use of the term "upset."

I don't consider UM over ND or FSU over BYU upsets. Michigan was at home, Notre Dame is overrated and FSU clearly had superior athletes against BYU.

BYU was ranked when they beat OU in Texas.

I don't consider Miami over GT a huge upset either. Both teams were ranked and people knew how good Miami was after they won @ FSU.

If BG could pull the upset I would consider it the biggest. Simply because USC is known for losing against an inferior conference opponent for the last 4 years. I don't know how many people nationally were legitimately shocked that USC went down with their backup QB on the road after beating OSU.

I agree with the others for the most part.

Also, Washington is a much improved team and is now ranked.

Oklahoma only lost because Bradford got hurt.

Miami is a much better team than in years past and GT is not all that much.

So yes, this would likely be the biggest upset this year and probably one of the biggest in MAC football history.

Yeah that works too.

After some thinking ... I think I'd still put USC losing to Washington at the top. The national title implications there were huge and the expectation levels of each team were just on different playing fields. Going into the season, USC was expected to be a national title contender and Washington was expected to show improvement and flirt with bowl eligibility. I think I'd put us beating Boise, if it happens, behind that at second. Unless all the chips fall the exact right way, Boise is not going to the national title game if they finish undefeated - they still would go to a BCS bowl, though, so this upset would have serious big bowl implications. Boise just does not lose - it's not their norm, so this upset would be huge, but not with the implications of USC losing. I put that above BYU over Oklahoma because I have never viewed Oklahoma as a national title contender. As for the rest ... yeah I'd call Michigan over ND an upset but not of the caliber as the ones above. Similar deal as Washington-USC - totally different expectation levels. ND was expected to improve over last year to a BCS level (which I never thought of as a reasonable expectation but others did) and Michigan improving to bowl eligibility. Because the expectation levels were so different, that win is an upset. Now as ND's house of cards is falling apart, seeing it not as a serious upset is definitely reasonable.

Michigan was only a +3 against ND. That wasn't an upset.

If BG could pull it off Saturday, I have a funny feeling most of the pundits would probably chalk it up to mid majors beating up on each other, and start trying to say that Boise wasn't that good to begin with. I hate to say it , but we all know the media, at best, begrudgingly recognizes the mid majors.

Back here in Realityland, I would have to rate it as one of the larger upsets of the year thus far. BSU is a good team. Period. End of thought. None of this "for a mid major" crap. They are good team. I was reading in the paper out here the day about how Boise has only lost (I want to say) 6 games since joining the WAC in 2001, all on the road. That might have only been conference games, but still. Even if that's only conference games, that's damn impressive. As someone said, they don't lose. Not at home, and not very often on the road either. They are a good, tough team, but I also think they are beatable. I'm just hoping and praying (preying?) that my Falcons are equal to the task this weekend.

I think it was probably Houston over Oklahoma St (ranked #5 at the time)

Though I think it would rank right up there...

Boise joined the wac in 2001 and lost to Rice and La Tech that year. In 2005 we lost to Fresno and in 2007 to Hawaii--all on the road. As of last Friday with the win over Fresno we are 65-4 in the wac. We are also 65-2 at home since 2001. Regardless, if we don't pay attention and disrespect the Falcons we can lose.

it would be a nice win for the program. Any win over a team ranked higher than we are is a quality win! I think it is fantastic to have a highly ranked team coming into the Doyt, but certainly don't believe that because they are undefeated and we can't seem to move the ball in the second half should mean anything other than it's going to be a great time Saturday! (That was a long thought..... I think I need to go lay down now....)

The biggest upset going against the spread so far this year was Oklahoma losing to BYU as a 23 point favorite. USC was a 19 point favorite and Oklahoma State was "only" an 11 1/2 point favorite.
