I was flipping through channels tonight and saw a UFL game, California Redwoods vs Las Vegas Locos. I never heard of the league before until tonight so I did a little research on the league. Its called the United Football League and has 4 teams. New York Sentinels, Las Vegas, California and the Florida Tuskers. All the teams colors are the same in one way or another, they all use light blue green silver and black. While searching through the rosters I happened to find Steve Sanders, who is playing for the New York Sentinels. Hes wearing his no.12 and is on the active roster. Thought I would bring this up to everyone as this is the first I have heard of this league.

BTW the next New York game featuring Sanders will be on Versus Oct. 29 7pm from Giants Stadium in New York.

My brother just told me about this league, and I flipped the game on a little bit ago. The play isn't bad (not nearly as bad as the XFL was), but it really does look like someone watched that stupid ESPN football drama from a few years ago and said: "Wow, those uniforms look terrible. I bet I can make 'em worse!"

That being said, I'm glad Steve has found a place to extend his career. I still think that he has a future in the NFL, he just needs the chance to prove himself. I still don't understand why the Browns let him go. Here's to hoping that this might be the break he needs.

Yeah from what I understand from what I read on UFL.com this league was set up by long time NFL guys who had a hand in the NFL for years and this league is supposed to help guys brake into the NFL. So from what im understanding this is like a developmental league if you will for the NFL. I dont know what the NFL's take on this is but I think this may be a good thing. The XFL was bad from the beginning. 1. It was created by (at the time) WWF. 2. The players didnt even have names on there jerseys, they were nicknames. One that comes to mind was "me so mean" or something along those lines. The color scheme for these teams is horrible as they are all almost the same. The game tonight is not bad itself and the fact that they have all former NFL coaches coaching is a plus. Looking at the NY roster again i just saw that there are 3 guys from the MAC on the team. Sanders from BGSU, Hopkins from Toledo and Wallace from Temple all play on the team. I really hope they add more teams to the league next year. Its kinda cool since all UFL games will be held on thursday and friday nights.

This is very cool, and could put the NFL on par with the rest of the major sports (Hockey INCLUDED) as having a developmental league, or minor league system. I always thought that the NFL was missing out on a huge market by not having a Minor League System and maybe the UFL is just what the doctor ordered. It plays on nights when the NFL doesn't, doesn't interfere with broadcasts and things like that and could be great for the not so wealthy NFL fans to be able to see some live football. Shoot, they could use College stadiums for this league.

Not only could they use college stadiums but they could create teams in cities that dont have an NFL team to give those people a chance to see future NFL stars.

I think it'll also be interesting if the AAFL ever gets off the ground. They basically took the college football idea and made a pro league out of it. The teams are named for the state they're in, play (in most cases) in the primary university's stadium and with their colors and are made up primarily of former college players from that state. For example, "Team Tennessee" will wear orange and white, and play in Neyland Stadium, while "Team Florida" will wear blue and orange and play in Ben Hill Griffith stadium. There are planned to be teams from Alabama, Michigan and a few others as well (I'm going from memory here), for I think around 8 total for the first season and all in all, it sounds kind of interesting. They also plan to play their seasons in the spring so as not to be in direct competition with the already well established high school, college and pro leagues. The thing is, their planned 2010 Inaugural season will be their third attempt. They initially were going to start play in the spring of 2008, but postponed it and then had to postpone it again this past spring.

But, the premise is interesting to me. The idea of getting former college players who didn't make it in the NFL together to play in their old colors in their old stadiums and against their old rivals is kind of intriguing.

I'm not sure intriguing would be the word I would choose to describe watching a scarlet-and-gray-clad Harris to Magner touchdown in front of 4,000 people at the horseshoe. Vomit-inducing I think would come to mind first.

Thankfully, Ohio doesn't have a team in the AAFL, so we don't have to worry about that.

The NCAA and the schools themselves won't really have any direct ties to these teams, apart from renting out their stadiums to the league. And not every team is playing in that state's main school's stadium. Team Michigan will play their games at Ford Field, not The Big House.
