Not 100% but I am pretty sure that you do need a passport to travel to Canada now.

Yes. You need one of the following to drive to and from Canada:

-- Passport
-- Passport Card
-- Enhanced Drivers License


Rules are different for kids. Also, if you are bringing in kids other than your own (nieces, nephews, friends) their parents need to sign the official form from the US Customs website and get it notarized.

We got the passport cards. They are cheaper than passports and are good for 10 years.

I thought the passports cards were only good for 2 years?

Nope, 10 years. Mine expires in February 2019.

The only catch about the passport cards is that I think they are only good for border countries. So if you plan any overseas travel in the next 10 years, pay the extra $15 or $30 or whatever it is to get the actual passport book.
