As it turned out, maybe not, but we did have a chance to change at least half of that equation, at least to get bowl-winning NIU in the title game, and we didn't do it. (insert cliches about "getting it done on the field" and "they don't play the games on paper" here)dstubb wrote:Obviously the two best teams in the MAC weren't in the title game this year.

Sorry, gotta call that one. Its not obvious at all.dstubb wrote:Obviously the two best teams in the MAC weren't in the title game this year.
1. Bowling Green or NIU could easily have lost to Iowa State--in fact, NIU did.
2. Toledo or Miami probably would have been Troy.
3. Connecticut played a hungry game, and there's no guarantee BG or NIU would have beaten them, either.
4. I think Toledo torches the Memphis D-backs just as we did.
5. In short, jumble the assignments up, and other teams could have won.
Fact. We finished third in the DIVISION in a year when the MAC was not strong. Was it a good year? Yes. It was fun, the bowl win was fun, and the team is great to watch.
Should we stop telling ourselves we were "really" the best team in the conference? Yes. If we're the best team, the NIU and UT games turn out differently. Miami won a big game on the road to put the divsion away. So did Toledo.
