Did Okla. hurt BG?

I thought about this before posting...but... do you guys think that the Okla. LOSS (as one - sided as it was) hurt BG's chances at a final top 25 ranking? My logic is that our loss to a Natl. Champ. (had OU won), or at worst, to a Natl. runnerup in a close game...might've been enough to boost us just a bit into the top 25. A loss to a team that got KILLED in the NC game diminished our performance a bit, in my opinion.

The fact that we played a bowl game so early in the bowl season might've also played a part in this, but as I saw so many teams in the 18-25 slots LOSE in their bowl games, I thought we'd still have a good shot. Hence, my OU question.

My guess is that the pollsters spend about 10 minutes completing their rankings. They probably spend about 9 minutes on the top 10 and the remaining 1 on the final 15. I don't think too many of them take the time to look at the lower top-25 teams in depth and compare them to the teams around them. I think they simply update their prior week's rankings and drop teams that lost several spots and bump teams up accordingly. Thus, I don't think it would have made any difference if OU had won or at least come close because they wouldn't have taken the time to consider that particular game.

I think a loss to a team that got KILLED in the MCB by UCONN might have played more of a part in our not cracking the top 25 than Oklahoma running into a buzzsaw (while continuously shooting themselves in the foot) in the NC game did.

Bingo.

We went 9-3 in the MAC. The closest things we had to statement wins were Memphis and Marshall.

If we went 9-3 with a win over brand name Top 25 team, we'd be in.

So Oklahoma only hurt us because of the opportunity cost. If we weren't losing to Oklahoma, maybe we could have been playing a Top 25 team we matched up better with.

Blowing a 20 point lead against the Rockettes cost us a top 25 ranking. The OU game probably didn't play much of a factor in IMHO.

Then again, I think Stroh's is a good beer...-

I believe the only people that remember that we lost to Oklahoma 40-24 are the people on this board. The truth is very few people think that game was close. Even the sports headlines afterwards said thing like: Sooners roll. Even many of the Sooner fans came here and said the game was a blowut at 37-10 and they laxed up to make it look closer. That is not true but if you don't come up with a win nobody is going remember or care.

Obviously we would have been in the Top 25 if we had beaten Toledo....probably even the Top 20. The reality is if you win you move up or stay in the same place, if you lose you move down. Not enough teams above us lost. If two more of those teams had lost, we would have been in. It is painfully simple.
