Will Harris Keep #7? ? ?
AP confirms Savage rumor
The AP just cited "a team official" in saying that Savage has accepted the job.
I don't want to sound too pessimistic here, but I really don't think that the Browns will keep Harris. I hope that they do, but they have Garcia, Holcomb, Luke McCown, and the number 3 overall pick in the draft. There is good chance that they will use that 3rd pick for another QB, since there is uncertainty for Garcia, and neither Holcomb nor McCown is likely to be the QB of the future for them. If Garcia goes, AND they pick something other than a QB with that 3rd pick, then they may keep Harris around. But if Garcia comes back and/or they pick a QB, then I think they will cut Harris. I really think that if they were considering keeping him around for next season, maybe they would've given him some playing time in the last few games when they really had nothing to play for. Then he could've shown that he is better than McCown and they would keep him. Again, I really hope that they keep him around, but I think in all likelihood he will be cut, or assigned to the practice squad like he was with Baltimore.
jlozer,
I don't really agree with your assessment.
For starters Holcomb is a free agent and it is almost 100% that he won't be back next year. He wants to start, and he doesn't think that'll happen in Cleveland. He has turned down quite a few offers to re-up with the team, and its looking like he'll be history for sure.
Garcia sticking around is an iffy proposition at best too right now. He is signed, and they'd have to take a cap hit to cut him, but he wants out. He was apparently promised that the Browns would run a West Coast Offense when he signed, and that clearly didn't happen. Obviously this will depend on how he fits into the new coach's system, but he wants out. I still think that he'll be back next year, but most other Browns fans disagree with my take big time. We'll see what Savage does here.
I really don't think they'll take a QB with the #3 pick, but I could be wrong. Savage has a history of going best player available, so it'll depend on who he thinks is BPA. Right now QB is not among the Browns biggest needs, as Garcia can fill in quite adequately if you gave him an OL & some playmakers. They could go QB, but I don't know if they will. I'd rather see them take Frye in the 2nd round, than take either of Rogers or Leinart. I'm not real high on either of those two, but I was way off on Ben this year, so what do I know?
As for the QB of the future, I don't think Luke has been dispensed as not being it yet. He was a raw project. Not as raw as Josh, but still very raw. He wasn't supposed to see the field this year, let alone start any games. Injuries forced that upon him. He didn't look good, but you put any 4th round pick QB out there with an offense that has lost 8 of its opening day starters to injury and you'll see them all struggle. The previous staff was confident that Luke could eventually become the QB of the future; he certainly has all the tools, and he looked damn good in the preseason. This year is a wash, and you can really not say much based on what we saw this year in the situation he was put in.
Harris didn't get a shot in those final games because he flat out wasn't ready. He was way more raw than Luke who was struggling mightily on draft day. Luke had been in that system since April, Josh only 2 weeks. You saw how Luke looked, imagine how much worse Josh would've looked. I think both guys have what it takes to become QBs, maybe one of them will develop in time. Playing Josh would've done nothing but hamper his development for the future. On top of that Robiskie was trying to win those games. Holcomb would've started all of them if he wasn't hurt. Playing a Rookie QB who has only been in your system for 3 weeks is NOT a good way to try and win a ballgame in the NFL.
Finally, you cannot discount the fact that the guy now making player personnel decisions for the Browns is the guy who drafted Josh originally. Savage was part of the braintrust in Baltimore. This is the same braintrust that drafted Josh and said afterward they got a steal. They said going into the season that they thought Josh could become a starting NFL QB in time. I doubt that much has happened in the past 8 months to change his opinion of the young QB. If anything, hiring Savage helps Josh's chances of sticking around for next season.
Not trying to jump on you, just politely disagreeing. I could very well see him on the practice squad next year again, too, however. He is not ready to play yet, and probably needs another year on the sidelines before even thinking about taking a snap. I do think, though, that he'll be on the sidelines in Cleveland next year. He'll also be given every shot to earn a spot on the active roster in training camp; as this post clearly indicates the Browns QB situation is in disarray quite a bit, so he'll surely be given that opportunity.

I made that post before I found out that the Browns hired Savage, and also without knowing Holcomb was a free agent. That changes my opinion a little, but not completely. I still do not think that (with the Browns at least) Josh will get an active roster spot. I think they will end up with Garcia (simply because of the cap hit they would take by cutting him) and McCown for sure, and then they will either draft a QB at some point in the draft (not necessarily with the 3rd overall pick), or they will go out and sign a veteran backup. Anyways, if they do draft a QB or sign one through free agency, that leaves Harris with no better than a spot on the practice squad, unless they decide to have 4 QB's on their active roster. Anyone is welcome to disagree with this, as it is only the opinion of a Dolphins fan anyways.
If they do keep Garcia & draft a QB Josh will battle with McCown for the 3rd spot. There is no way they'll keep 4 active QBs. I think having a new front office plays into Josh's favor a little. They have no loyalty to anyone, especially not a 4th round pick who struggled in his starting duty. If Josh is better in camp he'll get the roster spot. If Luke is better in camp he'll get the spot.jlozer8 wrote:I made that post before I found out that the Browns hired Savage, and also without knowing Holcomb was a free agent. I'm in agreement that they'll probably keep Garcia, but I'm not convinced they'll go after a QB on draft day. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if it were Garcia, McCown, Harris next year.
This is from Plain Dealer writer Roger Brown's piece in Friday's paper:
"Few Browns have seen their stock fall farther - faster - than rookie quarterback Luke McCown, who struggled in four late-season starts. One influential Browns official says McCown has regressed so much that he'll need a full off-season of intense work with a QB coach to be NFL worthy."

hammb, I think you've hit it head on. With all the holes the Browns have, I can't see them investing any of their top 4 picks in a QB, and I can't see them getting anyone better than McCown or Harris later than that. Like you said, they have too many other glaring holes right now.
And to the point by Brown's alleged insider, hammb, you've hit it on it again. The kid did the best he could given the situation. If the team sours on him it's either - 1) their own damn fault for thrusting him in there or 2) something other than how he performed on the field.
Holcolmb is history and I'd be very surprised to see Cherry Garcia in the o & bo next year. I'm guessing they pick up a veteran who is happy to carry a clipboard as the other QB.
87, that is exactly why I attributed the information to Mr. Brown. I wanted to make sure everyone understand the context of who was saying it.
He seems to be more like a entertainment writer who just likes to post bits and pieces of information mixed in with a LOT of his own opinion. It's not like that quote came from Terry Pluto or anything, so take it for what it is worth.

I doubt very seriously if he could get ahold of her directly either. It is more likely that it was her sorority sister's lover that he talked to and relayed the info to Roger.1987alum wrote: His influential official is probably the girl who runs the register at the gift shop!
That guy is a joke, I don't think anyone actually reads his columns and takes them for face value. He's like the Onion does the Plain Dealer
