49ers release Briggs

Post by gmartin »

Sad to hear that the 49ers released Briggs on Monday. Maybe the Lions could pick him up. They definitely need help on the defense.

To be blunt - WTF? Everything I've read and heard is that he was doing really well.

How do you figure?

Every team is only concerned with one thing: WINNING. Yeah it's hard to believe if you're a fan of the Browns, but the teams always do what they think is best to get them to that goal of WINNING. They're not always right, of course, but the teams are doing what they think is best. In this case they clearly think their team is better off with whoever they picked up in Briggs' place. Whether they'll proved right or not will remain to be seen, but there is nothing BS about it.

We had this on our board- somebody commenting that the choice of QB for the Rockets was political-that's crazy talk. you said it exactly right, Hammb. No one makes decisions based on anything except whether they are likely to help them win- well, OK there are Marlinesque moments but even then I think teams are willing to lose short-term to win longterm. Nobody is cutting Dyrell (sp?) Briggs because of money issues.

Yeah, you get teams doing things for money issues, of course. Every team has a budget, whether it's baseball and a self imposed budget, or the league imposed budget you get in football, basketball, etc. So teams can be forced to cut talented players for monetary reasons, but like you said nobody is doing that with Diyral Briggs...he was most likely making the league minimum.

It's all about winning, and nothing more. I love Briggs and would love to see him latch on somewhere else, but I assure you there was no reason the 49ers cut him other than they feel they're a better team with somebody else.

As to the Browns picking him up, don't see it. He could have a role as a situational pass rusher for a 3-4 team, IMO, but probably not the Browns. Mangini (being the idiot he is) likes big, slow thumping LBs. They only have a couple LBs under 250 pounds, and one of those just got put on IR yesterday. The OLBs are all over 250, some much bigger than that. Briggs just doesn't fit what they're looking for in a LB.

I've always wondered why our Football program hasn't produced a NFL starter in years. Suisham is the only player that has been anything close to that. There are only 120 teams in D-I football. We have 80 full scholarships to give out, and we can't produce one consistent NFL starter? I totally agree about the NFL. They aren't going to cut you if you are good enough, unless it is a money issue, which is not the case with Briggs.

Lichensteiger (sp?) started most of the year in San Diego last year and is impressive in DC this year.

Briggs was picked up by the Broncos and added to their practice squad.

Kory Lictensteiger was drafted with Denver, then went to Minnesota and is now back with Shanahan in DC. You're thinking of Scott Mruczkowski who started most of the games with San Diego last year.
