Too bad with Pankratz. I know he really played a poor game vs. UB, but he looked quite comfortable when stepping in for Schilz vs. Marshall and when starting in the Big House. I didn't expect he'd push to start, but having a guy who knows the offense and has been around for a few years could be quite valuable. If he transfers elsewhere to play, I wish him the best of luck.

Seems a bit thin to go with Schilz and Hurley and Johnson. 3 schollie Qbs? I know Pank just left but having only three at the spot is a bit unconventional. Yet all 3 will have 3+ years of elegibilty left so I am not sure another guy gives us much.

Globetrotter:

I think 3 QBs is plenty. Wouldn't be surprised to see us pick up a JUCO next year for depth.

Ideally, you like to have experience across the spectrum at all positions - frosh through senior. That's pretty doable at other positions, where kids can be slowly worked into a rotation early on, then become the "guy" as an upperclassmen. But it's awfully tough at QB, where one player tends to take 99% of the playing time.

That will be a challenge for Clawson, because he won't want to look up in three years and see that he has three seniors and a freshman on the roster at QB.

As long as Johnson redshirts this year, we'll have a rs-soph, a rs-fresh, and a rs in Schilz, Hurley, and Johnson. That means in 2013, we'll have a senior, a junior, and a sophomore in these three. That's pretty nice. I don't like that it took Pankratz, Pagel, and Watkins all seeking playing time elsewhere, but the end result should work out nicely.

The unfortunate thing is that we went from a three year starter senior at QB in 09 to a first year starter freshman in 2010. However, between Pankratz not working out, Glaud seeking playing time elsewhere, and Nate Brown not working out academically, this is what had to happen. Schilz was thrown into tough situations last year, so I think he's going to improve a ton going into this next season.

Coach has in the past said that he wants to recruit a QB every year.

Is anyone covering Spring practice this year? They tease us with the first day coverage and then nothing. I got spoiled last year with day to day coverage.

I like what I hear out of coach. I think he is building this program the right way. Sad to hear about Pankratz, but he was a GB recruit and had better players in front of him. I think he was given a fair chance, and thats all you can ask for. I hope he succeeds somewhere. He didn't play that bad when he did get the chance to play and I think he can help some team.

I'm glad to see that Rice is healthy and will be back on the field! I loved the way he played and I hope that will rub off on our defense.

I'm excited already haha

I think he will, but at some point you have to have a guy that is going to be the starter for 2-3 years without having to look over his shoulder. For what its worth, I don't think he'll bring in another *** QB for a couple years. I do see him bringing in some guys to develop as solid backups, though.

Schilz, Hurley, and Johnson is very promising for the future.

Right. It's tough to recruit a hot-shot HS QB if your starting QB is a sophomore. Most kids aren't going to want to come into a program knowing that they're likely going to sit for three years.

But it seems like Clawson is building the base and that's very promising.
