Player Numbers

Post by orangeandbrown »

I just noticed that Jelani Jordan is now #2 and Ted Piepkow has taken #5.

You'd get some pretty strong support from a lot of folks on that, IMO.
What J5 did was unreal. But Brian McClure was a huge player and doesn't have his # retired. Paul Miles (#29) is the only player with a retired #.

I agree with you Freak. Josh did a ton of GREAT things for this program and for the University. Maybe when the place him in the BGSU Hall of Fame, they'll retire it then....

Maybe wearing #5 will inspire Pipekow and he'll be the MONSTER we need on D.....

Freak:

Good call on McClure. When you put his numbers into historical context, they are mind-blowing. I remember attending the BG-Temple game (one of the dark days of the Blackney era) and being shocked to see someone wearing #18. I'm not suggesting that we start to retire numbers, because that's a big debate, but it was jarring.

Other players will wear #18 ... and #5, etc., but certain individuals will always "own" those numbers.

ffejfalcon,
I think Piepkow is becoming quite a LB...and I love his intensity....reminds me of #11! :D :D :D Hewitt was da man! Now Piepkow is my fave d player.

87',
McClure's #'s are mindblowing....especially in that time when the spread was known as something you put on a roll!

I don't mind that they don't really "retire" the numbers. Maybe Piepkow's favorite number is 5 and he got the shaft when he came here because Harris had it. Most of these kids probably won't play football past college so if he wants to wear the #5 proudly, that's fine with me. Switching sports, I do understand where you are coming from though. I remember when I saw Crawford walk out onto the basketball court with Antonio's number on and I was upset. But then I got thinking about how many pro bball players wore 33 and maybe Crawford idolized one as a kid. Since then, I've been alright with numbers not being retired.

I'm quite fond of our entire LB corps. All played quite well when the LB corps was banged up last year. I'm a huge Jovon Burkes fan. Whenever he's in he seems to make plays like crazy and can flat out blow people up. He did have to battle through some injuries last year though, hopefully he'll be fully healed this season. Sayles really impressed last year right off the bat at Purdue & OSU as well. I think our LB corps is in pretty good shape as a whole. I'm not nearly as confident about our secondary as a group, and everyone knows my thoughts on our DL, but I do like our LB corps :)
