Bowling Green State University’s Dwayne Woods was named to the Butkus Award Watch List this morning (July 15). The award is given to the nation’s top linebacker.
The watch list contains 51 candidates, honoring the now-retired professional jersey number of Dick Butkus, who is regarded by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history. The selection panel is comprised of 51 coaches, evaluators and journalists, coordinated by Hub Arkush of Pro Football Weekly.
Woods is the third Falcon this preseason to be named to a watch list. Ben Bojicic was named to the Rimington Award watch list, given to the nation’s top center and Kamar Jorden was named to the Biletnikoff watch list, given to the top receiver in the country earlier this week.
Woods, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, started all 12 games in 2010, recording a MAC-leading 134 tackles, which were the sixth-most in the nation at the conclusion of the regular season. The second-team All-MAC honoree chipped in with six tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and seven pass breakups.
The Collegiate Butkus Award watch list includes 51 candidates from 40 universities across 10 conferences. Woods is one of two players named to the list from the Mid-American Conference.
Semi-finalists will be named October 24, finalists November 22, and winners will be notified on or before December 7.
Looking forward to a monster year outta Woods...GO BG! BEAT IDAHO!

While I love the "honor" of being named to pre-season lists, why do they even bother? Freddie Barnes was a perfect example of being the most deserving candidate but not receiving the award and it instead going to a name school and a d-bag player.

True Vdub...it sucks knowing a MAC player has virtually no chance to win one of these awards but still, I like seeing BG guys represent. FB losing that award to that punk for ND was sickening.VDub26Falcon wrote:While I love the "honor" of being named to pre-season lists, why do they even bother?
