per John Wagner - Tol Blade 10-7-12 . . .

SPECIAL VISITORS: Among those at Saturday’s game were members of Bowling Green’s Board of Trustees. The idea was to look at Akron’s new stadium, which was opened in 2009, and gain ideas for a renovation of Doyt Perry Stadium.

And they need not look any further IMO. Akron's facility overall is by far the best in the MAC. Period. We'd be wasting time and money heading all the way to Orlando to see UCF's.

It's flat in Muncie, Indiana and Ball State's berm is very nice looking. It's also flat on the campus portions of Akron (very nice looking grass hillside) and EMU and they have them (though both are more dug into the ground). Kent State sort of has one in the south endzone now. Ohio has a hill in the south endzone, and while Athens is hilly, the endzone at Peden with the hill was built up to create the hill, as it was flat there too.

I love the idea of the cornfield endzone. I really do.

Another thing that would be unique and sweet would be an aviary at one of the end zones.

I hope they can do something to make the visitors side less empty. It is always disheartening to watch on ESPN2/3 and see the visitors side barren. I don't think it is a good representation for BG or a good thing to see as a potential recruit. That being said, I don't know how you fix that problem architecturally. Maybe it would just be easier to film toward the home side.

A restructuring of the east side is in order. It needs to be smaller than the "home" side, hopefully they'll take this into consideration.

Yager / Dix Stadium? Pass.

2 tier it like Akron did. Put 5,000 seats on the bottom and another 5,000 or whatever number in an upper deck. You can hide ugly crowds easily that way.

I agree with NOT making a smaller east side grandstand! That is a horrible idea! Kent State's east "grandstand" is a joke. It looks worse than most poor high school facilites. Those stands only run from about the 20 to the 20 and are very cheaply built. Miami's is at least a better constructed east side, but I strongly dislike the idea whatsoever. Shrinking sideline grandstands is a terrible idea. These are the best and most sought after seats in most any football stadium and you don't want to take them away. We may not fill them every game, but there are certainly times where we need these seats (home openers, bigger games). Kent State has all those empty seats in the north end zone, and that north endzone section is bigger than the east sideline stands. They at least took out the south seats and made improvements there, but they would have been better off making a mirror of the west grandstand and removing the north end zone seats all together than to settle with what they did. I think Dix is one of the worst facilties in the MAC even after the renovations (although I do like what they did with the south side project). BG has already basically done away with endzone seating (the band sits in the section in front of the Sebo Center) and we have tents and gathering areas with no fixed seats in the south endzone. We need to be following what Akron has done, not Kent State. Akron's stadium is #1 by far in the MAC and Kent State's is arguable the worst. We're trying to improve the Doyt, not turn it into a piece of crap.

I still say we relocate the press and suites to one tower on the East side with a few general seats and rebuild the West side with a two tier configuration. This way people are forced to sit on the West side because there are more seats available. with the TV cameras on the East side facing West attendance will look good even if it is so so.

I don't know if it's feasible to put TV cameras on the east side. Even with taller stands on the west side, that setting sun is brutal in the east stands. Maybe the more direct angle of a camera makes that less of an issue, but it seems like it would be a problem.

At one point, I was hoping the tents in the south end would be replaced with a more permanent structure, but for five days a year, they're pretty solid and very presentable. I do, however, like the idea of a hillside on that end, and maybe not anything huge, just a bit of a berm to give a casual seating option. Put the bookstore/FC tent on top of that and those locations become much better locations to enjoy the game.

Hey, I am a big fan of Akron's Infocision Stadium. As someone who has lived in Akron for a while-we have had to sit through years with the Rubber Bowl. What a piece of garbage!! The only things great about it were that I could get in for a dollar, I could walk there from my house, and the Rubber Bowl hot dogs were awesome... I think the Doyt has been improved 1000% since I went in the 90s.

I think we should all demand a stadium at least as awesome as this:

Why such a small video board? 100 yards? But the field is actually 120 yards from goal post to goal post.
