Oh my my my what could have been. For all the crying that Herbstreit, et all have done because the BCS let terrible, awful, NIU into the BCS and now we don't get to see Oklahoma or LSU playing...wah wahhhh. What could have been. A 16 team tournament the way it should be set up would have gotten us the following matchups (Using final BCS standings to seed and fill at large bids, ND takes an at large):
1. Notre Dame
16. Arkansas State
8. LSU
9. FSU
5. Kansas State
12. Louisville
4. Oregon
13. Utah State
6. Stanford
11. Boise St.
3. Florida
14. Wisconsin
7. Georgia
10. NIU
2. Alabama
15. Tulsa
Gone is the whining over the little guys making it (although I have to laugh that using the current rankings NIU is still a 10 seed ahead of the champs in both the Big 10 and the Big East). Gone is the question at the end of the year if they're leaving out a great team (Georgia is certainly better and more deserving than UF). And in it's place every team gets a chance to win a title, every conference is represented, and every conference will get a piece of the pie and a spot in the limelight.
NIU draws a tough matchup with Georgia though...I do think Boise might win that matchup, and I'd love to watch the LSU-FSU matchup for the rights to play ND. And a potential Georgia-Bama rematch in the 2nd round? Who wouldn't pay money to see THAT again, it was probably the best game of the year.
Wow it all makes far too much sense...

Agreed. I know it won't happen.Warthog wrote:and thus will never happen.hammb wrote:Wow it all makes far too much sense...
It just cracks me up when I hear big conference shills moaning over the BCS system when the system is what it is solely to ensure that the big conference schools continue getting the only title shots and the largest cut of the national pie. Then THEY are the loudest complainers every time that the system doesn't give them the whole pie. It cracks me up.
Here is a 16 team playoff where nobody with a worthy argument at being a title contender gets left out. There are some good matchups in the first round. And the 2nd round and beyond would be better than any bowl season in the history of college football. I also am convinced these 15 games would bring in FAR more total revenue than the current 5 game BCS (should be obvious).
I don't even have a problem if the first round were played at home sites of the higher seed to ensure good attendance.
This is what SHOULD happen. And what never will...that's sad...

I think you are wrong. This would not stop the whinning. There would be much discussion on Arkansas State and NIU getting the final two spots (15 & 16). Just like in the NCAA Basketball Tournament...bubble teams are always a fight between power conference teams and mid-majors. And, expanding the field in basketball still leads to whinning on the final spots no matter where the number is set. Football is no different. Who and how do we decide which 16 teams get into your playoffs?hammb wrote:Oh my my my what could have been. I guess you're right about the whining. There is no way you can ever end all whining...especially with sports fans. I mean hell us MAC fans GOT what we wanted and now here we are all still whining about the whiners! LOL We're sports fans, we'll always find reason to whine.Rollo83 wrote:I think you are wrong. And certainly you're right that there is always bitching and moaning about the college hoops tourney, but when it's all over with none of the teams that get left out ever really had a legit shot at winning the title. And that's my point above. The teams that are getting passed over (South Carolina, Oklahoma, etc) don't really have a real case IMO for getting into a championship tournament. They all played some of the teams in the tournament and lost to them (in some cases badly). So tough s**t...you had your shot on the field.
And that's what it's about to me...every team in the country deserves it's shot on the field. How do I fill my tournament? It's simple. All the conference champs are in. The final 5 spots are filled with the top 5 non conference champs as ranked by the BCS. The seeding is done across the board based on the current BCS standings. The BCS formula isn't perfect, and you can change it all you want, but I personally prefer doing the rankings and at large bids based on a public formula rather than a behind the scenes committee.
In my system if you win every game you play you WILL be the national champ. I don't care if you're Alabama, Ohio State, or Akron. If you win every game you play you SHOULD be the national title winner. It's total Bullshit to me that it doesn't work that way.

And I do it in the exact same method. I am not sure if I stole it from you or not but I completley agree. It's about getting a chance. That's all its about.
Re: What could have been...
I probably stole it from you...or maybe we both stole it from somebody else. I don't know and I really don't care. I don't think there is a reason to attribute the idea to anybody, because the idea is simply common sense. The conference champs get in, the top ranked non champs get in, you seed based on a set ranking system, and you let the field of play decide. There would be millions (probably closer to billions) of dollars made. Everybody SHOULD go home happy.Globetrotter wrote:And I do it in the exact same method. Re: What could have been...
And people would fill out brackets and people would care about games that would otherwise not matter and every team gets a chance. It makes so much sense. You have a month off for break for schools....get it done BCS. Everyone is happy, the little teams don't care anymore and can build programs by making tournament runs or simply by making it back to the tournament every year. Then who knows one year Arkansas State makes a run and wins and we are talking about it the rest of our lives.hammb wrote:I probably stole it from you...or maybe we both stole it from somebody else.
