Is this a record? EIGHT captains? Should be a psychological edge at start of the games. :-k

Thought the same. Kind of waters down the honor IMO but whatever works for them.

Eight is a lot. But, good problem to have. Lots of quality kids.

Pretty interesting they chose that many and the QB who is a 5th year senior, former captain, and 3 year starter wasn't named a captain.

That speaks volumes as to what the players think of his leadership, more like the lack thereof. If you select 8, and he doesn't get in, that is saying something to him and the coaches. IMO

Yeah...not a real good sign that your 5th year QB isn't a captain.

Exactly what I thought when I saw the captains list. I didn't get to watch the spring game, but based just on Wagner's writeup and the feeback provided on this forum, it doesn't sound as if there was anything encouraging about Shilz' performance. This program has been making progress building a team that is capable of winning the league this year. Poor QB play is the one thing that can serve as a detriment to that goal more than any other single on-field issue. I hope Clawson has a very, very short leash on Shilz and if he doesn't make significant strides early in fall practice, then he needs to hand the reigns to someone else and give them solid time workng with the #1's before the opener. If Shilz is still in his funk come fall and Clawson lets him play the first few games and then decides to make a change if things aren't better by then, that's going to make it much tougher on someone else to step in mid-stream, rather than getting in the practice time with the first team before the games count.

Maybe it's a good sign that he has been uprooted.

I would guess that the team didn't vote for him because there's no guarantee that he will be starting. How strange would it be for a 2nd string QB to be a captain? I bet if there wasn't a QB battle going on, Schilz would be one of the captains.

Wasn't Bart Tanski names a captain last year? From what I gathered, he didn't see much of the field. I know he was also injured, but I feel like I remember a lot being made about the fact that he was voted and named a captain despite not playing much. But as others have eluded, it is very strange to have a three-year starting QB returning entering his 5th year with the team and feeling this unsettled or concerned about the position. I know he battled a back injury last year but he was extremely inconsistent and at times couldn't even hit a guy on a short route. It wasn't as if he always missed on long passes as if he was laboring, he'd also easily air on way over a receiver's head who was open just 10 or 15 yards away and he'd rip a pass like the receiver was 20-25 yards downfield instead.

If he isn't the best option, he shouldn't start....but the ideal scenario in general for a team that returns so much talent would be having a firmly established, veteran starter at QB. Uncertainty at QB could wreck what should be a great season.

The other side of that coin is that a veteran team might allow for an inexperienced guy to succeed.

Wow! This is my biggest concern now coming into the season. Even if he doesnt start, the 5th year QB is supposed to be not just a leader but THE leader! Part of the expectation of the QB is to lead -- if he isnt captain material he probably should not be starting. I cant overstate thjs - its a big deal and a bad sign.

Btw, while not a great year last year, i have been a supporter of schilz.

No way we win a MAC championship with Schilz at QB. My opinion.
