Will UCONN come calling

Post by sportydude1818 »

I've come to the realization that we may not have clawson long term. Being in the Mac you know what you have signed up for. Good young coaches who do well in the Mac leave for bigger and better jobs.. With that being said Uconn may come calling for clawson.
If they pay a million bucks a year have great facilities and can compete every year for a league title does clawson listen? He's a northeast guy and may make a move.
Down side is the AAC conference may be worse than the Mac once Louisville and Rutgers leave but I think at some point Uconn leaves only because basketball is a high profile program

I don't see him going there. The AAC is losing their BCS tie-in and will essentially be on the same playing level as the MAC. I think Dave's time at Tennessee gave him a glimpse at the ugly side of big time college football and he may be hesitant to leave for a higher profile gig.

Yes I bet they will come calling and he may even be their #1 guy. I think Clawson would be rather dumb to take the position there. Connecticut has a shaky past, limited talent base to work with, and a very shaky future. The ACC powers have said they will not allow Connecticut in their conference. What other major conferences would be interested. In the AAC, if any team is on the move soon, it's Cincinnati to the Big 12.

If Clawson wants a larger program to run, 1: he has earned it and would leave BGSU Football in far better shape than he found it and 2: he can do far better and deserves far better than Connecticut. I think UConn is going to have a tough time finding a good coach.

Also I bet Pat Narduzzi of MSU defense fame is right up there on UConn's list. He'll be a great head coach sometime. Unlike Clawson, he is not established as a HC so he may be more interested in a program like UConn where any successes are welcomed and he would have the opportunity to build a program from the foundation.

Call me crazy...but I see UConn as a good fit for the Big 10. That job reminds me a lot of the Utah gig Urban left for. Recent national success in hoops, awesome facilities, great academics and a ton of room to grow.

Excepting all of the above....that job has better everything than we do and it's in a region where Clawson has a solid rep. I think he'd go there in a Hartford minute.

I agree somewhat. Louisville is a basketball school that's now threatening to become a major player in football. The rep of the BB program definitely provides potential. The problem is there is not much top talent coming out of New England. I'm still in the camp that Clawson is not a serious candidate anywhere at this time. If we get to double digits wins this year I will change my mind. Here's to hoping I change my mind ;)

I was thinking the same thing. This American Conference seems pretty comparable to what the Mountain West was and is.

UConn is also currently trying to upgrade their hockey program as well. Moving from the worst league (the "cost containment" Atlantic Hockey) to one of the top leagues, Hockey East. It is very possible that UConn's next football coach could lead them to the BigWhateverTheNumberisNow.

The negatives they have (conference affiliation, quality of high school football) are substantial but they could probably triple his salary. The big question he'll have to answer is if he can win there. Edsall proved you could but the circumstances were different. Most of our staff (Ruggiero, Elko, Monroe, etc.) has tri-state area connections from previous stops.

It's interesting that when Kingston was hired, one of the quotes about him in the press release came from none other than Warde Manuel.

Can he get a good Big 10/Big 12/ACC job directly from BG if we keep winning? I think so and that's why he should wait for a better place than this.

Fact remains is that Clawson likely isn't going anywhere unless he defeats a BCS school and gets to at least the MAC Championship. If you look at the coaches who have left the MAC the past few seasons, they all have this in common. Clawson's a good coach, but he hasn't proven yet that he can win the big game or scheme well enough for an upset.

You can say that about 99% of the BCS coaches that get hired every year from a smaller program.

I agree that he doesn't need a signature win but he needs to have something better than an 8-5 season to hang his cap on. At this point he still has a losing record and I'll standby what I have been saying since last year that BCS teams aren't looking for a several year rebuild. They want instant gratification so his resume isn't that impressive to a BCS athletic director IMO. I do think if we at least get to the MAC championship he will have a handful of BCS teams to pick from.

This is what I was basically alluding to. Nothing up to this point jumps out at you and says he's due for a bigger job because he really hasn't earned it. Yes, he's turned a program around and yes he's winning games he should win, but an 0-2 bowl record and no MAC Championship appearances will be red flags.

Another negative about UCONN nobody has pointed out is that their boosters run the show which is a huge turnoff for most coaches.
