WKU's Petrino headed back to Louisville

Post by BGSU33 »

Looks like next year's matchup between BG and WKU will now feature two new head coaches. I also saw WKU's DB Jonathan Dowling (Florida transfer) is leaving early for the NFL.

Here's something I found very interesting about looking at his contract buyout:

Petrino signed a four-year contract with Western Kentucky in December 2012. The deal has a base salary of $850,000 and includes clauses in which the oft-traveled coach must repay the school $1.2 million in six installments beginning a month after any early exit, while the program that hires him must agree to schedule a two-year, home-and-home series with WKU.

I think that is a very interesting thing to add to a contract for a school. While it isn't as big of a deal to see Louisville make a return trip to Bowling Green, can you imagine if he had gone to a much bigger school such as Ohio State, Alabama, or other major schools along those lines. I think that is an interesting clause added to their buyout and it will be interesting to see if other schools also add it to their coaches buyouts also.

Also, that is a *lot* of money. Shocking to me that Western Kentucky can afford that.

Supposedly they are going to promote offensive coordinator Jeff Brohm (their own Scheier/Elko, as it were) in the interests of continuity.

Schad,
I agree about 850K for WKU's job, but they hired a "big name" coach and probably had to pay "big name" coach salaries (so to speak) to get him. Bigger surprise is that Louisville is taking him back.
