This times 1000. We didn't have a defensive coordinator last year. We had a wide receivers coach masquerading as a defensive coordinator and the results were horrendous. Having a legit coordinator with a strong track record will make us a better defense, even with less experience. The talent is there. The coordinator is there. The drive is there. Maybe I'm overly optimistic ... but I'm feeling fine about our defense.
I'm coming around to the idea that this might be true. BGSU has a couple of former defensive players in the NFL right now, right?

Let's hope coaching can fix this.
BG has three players from last year's defense in the NFL right now. Martin (Arizona), Lynch (New England and Adjei-Barimah (Tampa Bay). Kendall Montgomery was released from Miami yesterday.

Scheming is going to be important. Coach Ward employs an NFL-style system with more man coverage and having a safety available to stop the run, it's similar to the defense Mike Elko uses and the role BooBoo had as the rover/strong safety. The corners will need to be mentally prepared to be on islands at times and likely play in press coverage situations.

BG's biggest question mark is the defensive line.

It's not easy being a defensive coordinator with this type of offense. Your defense is going to be on the field, A LOT. If there are roughly 15 possessions a game, the goal should be to get 10 stops, assuming you limit them to a few field goals. That would mean you are giving up 24-31 points a game. I would be ecstatic those results this year. New coordinator or not, the defense lost a ton of talent from last years team, that's not easy to replace.
Our biggest question mark is our LB's. We can roll six DT's with significant game experience.... we have some flexibility to move one or two of them outside to DE and the starters at DE have a lot of game experience also. We're comparatively thin and inexperienced at LB.

A lot of questions will be answered if a guy like Lunsford can come on and make an impact, then you can slide Colvin back outside on run downs. But...woo. Defensive end is thin, right now. Baird has never been much more than a pass rush guy, Bush only played in 6 games last year, and then your backups are 2 guys who have never played a down in a game.

Wouldn't be surprised to see true freshman in the game on both the DL and LB.

We also have Malik Brown at DE...he showed some flashes last year and he has good size.

Yea, I was hoping he would come out and win a starting spot. It was surprising to not even see him listed on the 2 deep.

You never know. The 2 deep was never exactly accurate last year.

He's bigger or as big as all of our linebackers and a couple of defensive lineman. Sounds like the guy from Pitt we faced in the bowl game two years ago. We couldn't stop him and that was with the MAC's best defense that year.

If you are Butch Jones, don't you just line it up and pound us like Wisconsin did last year?

If you'd like, here's a good film study regarding Hurd. My favorite part is the second GIF where he "takes the DBs for a ride."

Since UT has a new OC this year, we aren't sure what his tendencies will be. Along with a big RB, he has tall WRs. The starters are all around 6-3 and move well and the TE is a very good receiver as well. Don't be surprised to see a lot of work on the short passing game early to try to keep the Falcons from loading the box.

So Max. We meet again. If I recall this time last year we were chatting it up with the USU fans. Hello there! :D

Yep...I dropped by and wished them luck on their game tonight. They were pretty awesome fans, as a whole. Howdy.
