If you take a bad job and lose your head coaching career is done. Clawson eking out 3-0 wins will not endear him to any major school's search committee or alumni base. Hazell is indeed making more money to lose at Purdue than to win or lose at Kent but where does that leave him after 3 years, or Beckman for that matter?

From a pure financial standpoint they need to hold out as long as possible and position themselves in an ideal environment to win. Babers' next move should be to Miami or Baylor when those jobs open, not Maryland or Illinois. (Both hired coaches from Temple and Houston, respectively, lest anyone think a MAC pedigree is insufficient). In Kingston's Falcon Club letter he spoke of the importance of coaching recruitment and retention, and this is the argument he needs to make to Dino if and when the time comes.

Miami Ohio's coach took a paycut to relinquish his offensive coordinator job at Notre Dame. The AD correctly told him that the monetary reward wouldn't be going from 600K to 700K or 600K to 1.8 million for a 3 and out stint, but rather 600k to 3 million plus for the long haul in the right situation.

That's all a gamble. You can't sit around waiting for the perfect opportunity because it may never come. Baylor is a major player with tons of money to throw around now, who says they want anything to do with Babers? Or Bowling Green goes 5-7 next year and he is completely forgotten.

A good coach believes they can win at say Maryland or Purdue, as they should. They may fail yes but at the very worse they can still be coordinators somewhere else all after making 5-10 times more money for several years. If you tell me I can make 10 times what I make now but it may only last 5 years, I'd be gone.

2 million per year vs 400k per year is a no brainer in today's coaching world. Clawson can work 1-2 years at Wake and equal 5-10 years at BG not to mention the improved facilities, budget and climate. Clawson is known for rebuilding a program not winning day 1. Unless something crazy happens, he'll get at least 3 years at Wake and most likely more. That's 6 million to 1.2 million for your family in 3 years.

In the MAC its difficult to sustain excellence because you depend on experience to carry you to the top but then fall back to the 1st & 2nd year players to re-build that experience and thus each team realizes that cycle in wins and losses. NIU has been an exception to that rule but by and large each MAC team has cycles of success (Ok, EMU is also an exception at the other end).

The only way a BG can keep a successful coach is to have an administration that understands those cycles and supports the coach through the inevitable youth based rebuilds but the coach must believe the admin will support them. I think the latter is more unlikely than the former. Also, the coach has to be willing to accept a good salary and not chase a monster salary. You sort of need a tortoise, not a hare. Unfortunately the coaching profession breeds a lot of hares. They know the industry is filled with short lived careers so they must pounce on the first monster salary they can get to maximize their compensation in the short term.
