BG Defense Applaud the Effort

Post by falcon83 »

I have been critical of the defense for the past two years. They still have a lot to work on, but I thought they had a great effort today and need some recognition. Good job guys!!

They played a heckuva game today.

The funny thing was it seemed to me like the accuracy issues of akrons qb actually cost us a number of ints. We had some very good coverage downfield a number of times that had he made an accurate throw to his wr we would have had as good of a play on the ball as they did.

Either way great effort. They racked up some rushing yards but they did so on a bunch of carries. And trying to grind out 4 yards per carry isn't gonna beat an offense like ours.

One of the best efforts we've seen in the last season and a half! That is exactly the kind of production we need to become MAC Champions again!

Defense looked like they finally grasped Coach Ward's scheme today, noticed the safeties and corners were quicker at attacking the receivers and anticipating where the ball was going. On the run side, BG did a good job at containing Woodson from getting off any big scrambles and forced him to throw which he proved was not necessarily his strong suit.

The D has been improving each week. Yesterday was AWESOME. IF we can get that kind of effort with this O? Sheet.

Interesting note: by yards, this was our worst offensive game of the season. Offense racked up 500+ yards and that was fewer than any other game. Yet I think this was the biggest margin of victory.

Reason? Defense ... and special teams. We had good field position all day. Instead of relying upon 95 yard passes to Roger Lewis, the team consistently started not far from midfield.

When our D and special teams plays the way they did, good luck beating us. When our offense has a short field, there is no way to beat us. Roll along!

Akron still has the 3rd overall D in the MAC, even after yesterday's pounding. Their front 7 were actually playing well this year and we made them look silly. If 532 yards of total O is the least we hit? Dang. BG forced 4 turnovers yesterday and we make teams pay when they do. Killer instinct...

Kent State is now #1 in overall D at 290 yards a game, and 4th overall in scoring D at 24.7ppg.

In MAC play, the BG defense ranks ahead of, Akron, Buffalo, UMass, Miami, WMU, CMU, NIU, Ball State, and EMU in points allowed per game. BG is giving up 23.3 PPG.

They are scoring...49.6.

Just for fun....Ohio is giving up, 21.3 PPG and scoring 20.6 PPG.

BG is +79 in point differential. The next best East team is Ohio at -2.

For as much as some people like to harp on the D.....they are quietly one of the better in the conference right now.

The defense is coming together at a good time. Brian Ward is one great DC. I am so glad we have him. What an improvement over last year!

It's hard for me to judge our defense against teams like Buffalo, UMASS, Akron, Ohio, and Kent State. These are for the most part, teams that aren't very good on offensive. We should be able to compete with these teams.

The better yard stick for me will be at WMU, Toledo, MAC Championship, and the bowl game. We've played two teams that posed a real threat to us on offense, Tennessee and Memphis. We weren't very good in either of those games defensively.

Yes, I am seeing progress, but still worry about what Ely and the Toledo running backs will do to us. Same goes for Zack Terrell and Jarvion Franklin at WMU.

Our offense can score with anybody left on our schedule, but somewhere we'll need to win a 28-24 game and the defense will need to protect a 4 point lead with under 3 minutes left in the game. Then, we'll see how far they have come.

I have probably been more critical than just about anyone I speak with about BG Football off this board. I must properly eat the proverbial crow for atleast one week. Hell of a job by the defense this week. They were prepared and seemed to be really fired up for this game. Akron always comes into this game with a lot of "pub" saying oh this is the year the Zips take us down and take the East crown...psssshhh...

Akron blows, they always have blown even when they won the conference title in 2005.

59-10 is certainly more of a margin than I anticipated, but I loved every second of being proven wrong about the defense. Fantastic work, gents!
