Frustrated with the NCAA

Post by gmartin »

Now this has been a problem for the past 15 to 20 years but I am really getting frustrated with the NCAA. Can we please stop allowing other schools to hire coaches away until the season is over. In professional baseball and basketball you have dead periods where nothing can happen. In the NFL you cannot talk with coaches during playoffs. Why is it so hard for college football to follow the same rules. Why can't we move recruiting back a few weeks and move the spring came back a few weeks. Allowed team to play in bowl games and playoff games and then let the school's approach them about job openings. It's not fair to the athletes to have a coach leave while prepping for a bowl game. It's time for the NCAA to stand up. Let the season finish out. Let the bowl games be complete and then start recruiting a new coach.

It will take a coach from a playoff team leaving before the playoffs for the NCAA to act. I say we target one of the playoff teams and hire away one of their prime assistants, then demand they be here prior to their game. That would get the NCAA to pay attention I feel.

G5 schools will be better off putting negotiating clauses in coaching contracts which prohibit contact from an outside school until all conference games have concluded, this includes conference championships. Either that, or slap on ridiculous buyout amounts on these deals so that in the end you're walking away with the cash in hand to bring in a coach at a better salary or use the funds to make some improvements with facilities.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.

Arkansas State did this with Blake Anderson after going through 3 coaches in 3 years (Hugh Freeze, Gus Malzahn, Bryan Harsin).

They staggered it so, it went 3 million (2 years), 2 million (2 years), 1 million (final year). No idea what they did / will do when they extend his contract. Of course his base salary is, $700,000. If MAC schools could (and apparently at least Toledo and WMU can) structure contracts like this, I think we'd all be happier.

I would love us to structure a contract with insane buyouts like that as well, but of course the issue is if you're too aggressive you'll miss out on the coaching candidates you want.

I do think BG should have the cache to get closer to those numbers though. Dino's buyout (like Clawson's) is just so freaking low it doesn't even really move the needle for us. We have a history here...3 of our last 4 head coaches have gone on to massive paydays, and all 4 of those head coaches have shown if you do a good job you can win here. This is traditionally one of the top programs in the conference, and has been a coaching cradle since the days of Doyt Perry.

Offering that type of environment to a candidate should be very enticing for somebody that has a big plan for his career. I'd think a much larger buyout tied to the contract should be aggreeable...I mean would they rather coach at one of the 2nd rate MAC schools where it is traditionally harder to win.

In the end the buyout clauses are really just real money to us anyhow. The teams that are grabbing our coaches aren't gonna let a few hundred thousand bucks change their mind. Need the coaching candidates to see it that way as well though.

I was shocked to see how low his buyout is. I had no idea it was that low.
