With the option-attack team Georgia Southern coming up in our bowl, it got me wondering, can anyone remember the last time BG even faced an option team? The last time I can recall was back in the mid-1990's against Ohio when they used to run it. I remember getting drilled by OU in back-to-back years 38-0 in 1996 and 24-0 in 1997 when Jim Grobe was OU's head coach and Kareem Wilson was the QB. They destroyed us with it. We also played Navy a few years before that and they've been running it for as long as I can remember but I honestly can't remember if they did in those specific years (I assume they did). Can anyone else think of a team since then that has utilized the option?
Also, I don't think we even started bowl practice until yesterday. When I first found our we were playing Georgia Southern I thought at least we had a few weeks to prepare for that offense. But after the coaching changes and finals, I understand we just got back on the field yesterday meaning we're really only going to have just over a week to prepare once you factor in travel and that they game is next Wednesday. It's not nearly as much time as first expected and teams that have a bye prior to facing option teams usually do much better than on a normal week.

GO BG!!!
Re: Last time BG faced an option team?
Well..
Don't know how well the B/G football program has done against the triple option in the past, but if it makes you feel any better? We (GS fans) have no clue which of our teams will show up for the bowl game.
Truthfully, at times this year our offense has been virtually unstoppable, and the defense awesomely good..
Truthfully, at times this year our offense couldn't do squat, and the defense was absolutely porous as Swiss cheese.
Now we add the additional element of Coach Fritz departing for Tulane, and that news could be either very good, or very bad for our Eagles.
The Georgia Southern Eagles might be mad and determined and serious and come ready to kick butt and take names, thereby having a chance to actually win the game, or?
The team that walks on the field the night of the game simply might not have the incentive, or passion, to compete, and we'll take a whipping (and the pay out) and limp back to SouthEast Ga.
I'm a dye-hard Georgia Southern Fan, have been for decades, and I will love my Eagle football team NO MATTER which team shows up on the 23rd.
Best Wishes,
jp

Re: Last time BG faced an option team?
This is such a strange matchup....add the dynamic of the head coaches leaving and, at least in BG's case, almost the entire staff being gone. I don't know what to make of it.
I feel like BG will give up some big plays, but Georgia Southern won't be able to keep pace.
Option teams can make defenses look silly if they aren't prepared. Human nature would tell you that our coaches leaving aren't locked in on getting the team prepared, not intentionally, but they've got their mind on Syracuse too. If our defense isn't disciplined, you're gonna see a lot of 30, 40, 50 yd runs.

I think GSU is gonna give us fits and I expect this game to come right down to the wire. It also certainly doesn't help that we already lost Minns as that's a big loss since he's a space eater in the middle. If BG can somehow jump ahead by two scores early it'll favor us big time. But if we fall behind and have to play catch-up, it's gonna be really tough because our offense could be standing on the sidelines an awful lot.apollo wrote:This is such a strange matchup....add the dynamic of the head coaches leaving and, at least in BG's case, almost the entire staff being gone. Re: Last time BG faced an option team?
Game Week is upon us! I wish I had watched some BG games this year, from what I've been told, this could be a real corker! ( does anyone even use the word corker any more??) I agree with the Southern post earlier about which GS team will show up. We don't do anything half-assed. When we win, we do it spectacularly! And when we go down in flames we do it just as spectacular. I'm talking mournful
poetry written and sad songs sung. ( i.e. Ga.St & Appy.) However, since the late- 80's when I 1st made them my team, they have more time than not given us wins and pride. Proud to be in this bowl with y'all, be we're coming to win it. (Just can't let Appy be the ONLY Sunbelt team to win a bowl !! ) Nothing personal, I'm sure you guys understand!
