9/11 and NFL

I have a question and no one I asked has an answer.

Ever since 9/11 the NFL has had a special moment of silence, a special ceremony when games have landed on a Sunday on 9/11. Three times now since that tragic day.

My question: Why don't they have anything special when a game is played on Sunday, Dec 7th. My Grandpa, who is now 95, was at Pearl Harbor. I would just wondering why the NFL doesn't remember that day.

Good question.

I'd guess it is for two reasons. One, 9/11 was still recent. Young parents were high school kids when it happened. Two, the Japanese military attacked a strategic US military base in Hawaii, where non-uniformed non-military criminals targeted and attacked large civilian populations in New York and Northern Virginia.

My grandfather and I have talked about this topic before. He was in high school during WWII and joined USAF via ROTC at Ohio State. I personally agree with him that both days should receive the same reverence, despite the differences. Both were terrible losses of life that changed the course of our nation, deeply impacted a generation, and led to world changing war.

Perhaps this needs brought to the attention of the NFL.

Sadly, this tradition of the moment of silence will fade as the generations who lived through the event do. There are very few people still alive today that lived through WWII. That is why so few of the dates are mentioned anymore. Pearl Harbor, VE Day, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, VJ Day...etc. Very few people feel an emotional connection to those events that they seem to have been forgotten. 10 or 15 years from now, you'll hardly hear reference to 9/11.

Disagree. I think this massive event will still be remembered for a very long time. And unless another large scale attack on US soil takes place, this is the one that will be continued to be memorialized through Patriot Day events for many, many years to come.
