Betrayal at Wake
Re: Betrayal at Wake
Uh ... apollo ... Wake is demolishing AAC champ Temple right now. Might want to rethink your constant bashing of everything BG or formerly BG related.
It turns out football games are much easier to win when the opponent hasn't been handed your game plan. Who knew?

Clawson is a very good coach who's won everywhere he's been. I do not understand the antipathy some of you have for him since he built the team that won two MAC ,titles.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Betrayal at Wake
I don't get it either. He had some deficiencies but find me a coach who doesn't. Hadn't won a MAC championship in 20 years and boom we have 2 in 3 years. Give the guy some credit.

Re: Betrayal at Wake
Dont know how many of you actually met Dave or had a chance to talk with him, but i can summarize in 2 words ... CLASS ACT
Joyce and I even had a chance to meet his family after mass at the Newman Ctr. After a BG win. Again took an additional half hour or so to talk with us. Joyce's 1st comment afterward? " what a nice man and patient family" ( they were waiting to go to dinner)
He's got a well deserved rep. As a program builder and I'm happy to see him having success at Wake.

Re: Betrayal at Wake
I couldn't be happier for him. A total class act who did the impossible at BG and did it again today. He is a perfect fit for Wake and I hope he is successful there for years to come!
Re: Betrayal at Wake
Whatever....beating Temple without a head coach and a staff on their way out isn't a statement win. We'll see next year....they aren't beating anyone of any substance.

Thanks Debbie Downer. Can't wait to see your reaction in 10 days over in the 'other sports forum about a certain sport'.apollo wrote:Whatever....beating Temple without a head coach and a staff on their way out isn't a statement win. I have to say it is quite satisfying seeing some people on this board proved wrong.

I wouldnt be surprised if DC ends up back here. Seems like the type of guy who loves to coach and if he htis a ceiling somewhere wouldnt mind settling down.
Re: Betrayal at Wake
I didn't read excuse making in that article. I read how he touted the improvements made since he's been at Wake and he has every reason to do so. He's done a great job at elevating that program from where it was when he got there, just as he did at BG and his previous stops. Seems ridiculous to bash him when he's had nothing but positive results wherever he's been and he's always done it the right way.apollo wrote:Clawson is very good at excuses....That offense better be much improved...Elko was the only reason Wake was respectable. In the next couple years they'll be lucky to get into the Armed Forces Potato Bowl presented by Huffy, Flex Seal, & Big Mike's Party Mart played in Kazakhstan vs a MAC school.
Re: Betrayal at Wake
Dave Clawson is a fine football coach. He's an even better man, from all accounts. He builds programs and he does it the right way. For nearly every reason imaginable he was 100% the absolutely PERFECT coach to come here to replace Brandon when we hired him.
I think he'll continue to do all of those things at Wake, and I think Wake MAY be self aware enough to realize that ACC titles are not in their DNA nor in their future. If they're content being the annual bowl team winning 7-10 games on any given year I think Clawson can be a good long term coach there. Anytime we lose coaches to those sorts of jobs, though, I worry that they think they're better than they are. If they're expecting him to bring ACC titles then they'll likely can him at some point because he (nor anybody else) can really hope to accomplish that at Wake.
My only beef with Clawson is I just don't care for his X's & O's brand of football at the college level. It works, and you can win with it, but I think it hamstrings you to only winning games where you can out talent/out execute/out discipline your opposition. There are plenty of systems out there that allow you to outscheme and win games that you shouldn't; Clawson is more traditional in that sense, and not my cup of tea. But as a program builder? He's outstanding. I don't get why anybody that was a BG fan would have a beef with coach Clawson. He took over a program that was in a real disaster, losing scholarships, discipline problems, academic problems, etc. It took time, but he built a roster that was among the premier programs in the MAC for a 3 year run.
I'd take him back here in a heartbeat if he ever needed a gig.

Re: Betrayal at Wake
I don't hink he's going to need a gig for a spell...Wake signed him to an EIGHT year extension right after the first of the year. I think they're happy with him.
Congrats to coach Clawson!!
