You don't think Jinks was well thought of i the coaching ranks? We just picked him out of a hat?

Pelini may not want the pressure of being a HC. You can make far more as a DC at a P5 school than as a HC here or most other smaller FBS schools

From the article link below...

Even months ago he became a first-time FBS head coach at Bowling Green. Experience? In the big-time world of college football, his amounts to nearly zero. Jinks is believed to be the only FBS head coach without prior head coaching or coordinator experience at the FBS or FCS level.

"I don't have an answer to that," Jinks said. "I'm glad it did [happen]."

Jinks? Mostly a high school lifer who caught the brass ring when Bowling Green called.

"It was out of nowhere," he told reporters in the spring. "I didn't have an agent. I wasn't actively pursuing head coaching positions, definitely not 1,500 miles from Texas."

Jinks was a dubious choice for us, under the circumstances....but he was viewed as a "fast riser" on the staff at TT...making Associate HC in his 2nd or 3rd year (I forget) there and there were some fans/media of the smaller D1 Texas schools pimping him to be a HC candidate for jobs like North Texas.

So far as him not being a coordinator before...Urban Meyer was a WR coach before he got here...not saying Jinks is Saint Urban, but you can't just exclude candidates based on that criteria

A serious benefit of hiring Carl Pelini: we can now follow @FauxPelini on Twitter! Like this awesome gem welcoming Mike Riley to Nebraska.

I like this hire and also believe in second chances -- but there IS risk involved. If there wasn't, he wouldn't be here, most likely. He has the football pedigree that would have typically gotten him a much higher profile position, without the past problems, obviously. So, BG is taking that risk and hoping it pays off.

It will be very difficult for any DC coming in to be worse than what we have seen under Jinks so far. So I expect some pretty substantial improvement in this area. If they can become even an AVERAGE MAC defense, this team can win a lot of league games, because I think the offense next season could be something special.

As for the debate about Jinks being hired...whether he was considered an up and coming coach or not, BG hiring him as they did was one of the most stupid things I've ever seen from an athletic department; especially when you've just had two coaches who won MAC titles in 3 years, and went to three straight MAC title games. And yes, I realize Babers did not help things by neglecting recruiting as he did.

Here's hoping Pelini can stay on the straight and narrow -- and be the difference, not only in improving this team defensively, but in improving its coaching overall.

Here's something to think about regarding the difference a new DC can make. I use Purdue as an example not just because I'm an alum but because they had a tremendous defensive turnaround from last year to this year. New coaching staff, very little turnover on roster, and notably an awesome DC in Nick Holt.

In 2016, in Big Ten games, Purdue gave up an average of 42.6 points per game. In 2017, that dropped at the way to 19.2. That is a 23 ppg difference. The most points allowed this year in a game was 28. Last year, the fewest three were 26, 27, and 31. Every other team scored in the 40s with one scoring 50 and another hitting 60s.

New defensive staff can have a major impact immediately. Michigan had a similar turnaround from 2010 to 2011 with the coaching staff change. Greg Mattison took over and turned a bottom 100 defense led by Greg Robinson into a top 20 defense.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm very optimistic about the new DC. Turn this defense around and we could go from 2-10 to 8+ and east champs. Yes, I'm serious. That could happen in the MAC.

We aren't that far away at all. If Doege had been under center all game, I think we would have beaten Ohio and Akron, for example. With a better defense, too? It's exciting to think about.

That was my first thought. We have an Offense about to explode...just give me a decent D and we can win the East.
