"Great chance to shock the world!

Post by Warthog »

From Kirk Herbsteit's chat on ESPN yesterday:
mike(chitown): Kirk, any upset specials this weekend?

Kirk Herbstreit: Tough to come up with upsets because of just an unfamiliarity with teams at this point. With that said, last year was the year of the MAC. This weekend, the MAC jumps right back into it with some great chances to shock the world. Miami (OH) v. Michigan. Toledo v. Minnesota. Bowling Green v. OU. Akron v. Penn State. N. Illinois v. Maryland. We'll see how the conf. does this weekend.

Looks like he is at least giving us a chance Saturday. :D

But then I read Herbsteits "Weekend Guide" :(
Bowling Green vs. No. 2 Oklahoma (noon, ABC)
Oklahoma is coming off two straight losses, and many people wonder if the Sooners have been exposed or figured out. They will face a Bowling Green team this weekend returning 17 starters from a team that finished 11-3 last season. The game is a much greater challenge than most highly ranked teams will see in their season opener.

The Falcons also use a spread offense that acts as an equalizer, but with Omar Jacobs making his first career start at quarterback against Oklahoma's incredible defensive athletes, Bowling Green will be at a big disadvantage. The Sooners are too big in the trenches and bring too much pressure.

OU may take a little time to figure out the Bowling Green offense, but once that happens look for the Sooners to hand the Falcons a sound, 45-10 beating

For those of you who didn't notice, Ball State *really* hung in there against Boston College last night before losing 19-11.

If Ball State is coming out of the gate that tough, I think it portends for a good weekend.

They very well could cover.

I don't think some of you have seen how good this OU team is, nor do you understand the consequences of a young QB. All it will take is Omar throwing a pick on the 2nd drive. That could very well snowball into a 45-3 beating. Real Quick. OU is NOT OSU. Everybody plays OSU tough, they then win, because they're good, as they did to us. The list of those that came CLOSE against OSU is long and daunting, although pretty much all of them ended up losing, as we did.

OU is another matter. This team will finish you like OSU doesn't. When you go down, they kick you. They kick you in the nuts till you cannot breathe. Then they stand on your throat until you're dead. After dead they will crap on your carcass (see 77-0, Texas A&M).

BG can play this game. They can win this game. If I were a betting man (I am) I'd avoid this game, because that spread could go either way. What I know from watching Oklahoma play is that if you make a mistake early you could be down 14-0, 21-0 before you know it. That takes you out of your offense, plays into their defense which then starts making a play or two. Then you're down 35-0 and you're playing backups. Suddenly you start to feel pressure just to get a point, as their backups are still scoring because they're loose and ready to show what they can do. BG could make this a game and even win. BG could get absolutely trounced. My prediction is somewhere in the middle with a sound 21-24 point defeat. So that is beating the spread, but I could still see OU covering if we make an early mistake.

I think we all know how good Oklahoma is but we're not going to concede the victory.

Ball State usually is a tough challenge at home, just ask UT. BSU has a little talent on the team finally, especially in Ridgeway.

As for BG and Herbstreit's fearless prediction, he again plays it safe by giving OU a wide margin of victory over BG. In fact, I can't remember the last time Kirk didn't pick the favorite. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but you'd think he'd start to give BG a little more credit against team outside of the MAC. I guess he'll leave it up to Corso to pick the game to be a little closer. Sure BG is at an underdog, but 45-10 is a drubbing. I would hope that we can keep it close and maybe, just maybe win a squeaker.

yeah good call dude. According to you, all of the teams in division I-A and I-AA who aren't top 10 in the polls should have ZERO fans who support them just because they aren't expected to win every single game they play. I guaran-damn-tee that if OK started doing poorly and losing 6-7 games a year that you would quickly stop supporting them and move onto another team who is losing 1-2 games a year. You tell us that we shouldn't expect anything but a blowout and to be demolished and for us to be shown how crappy mid american conference teams are. Well gosh maybe you should've had that attitude going into the NCAA championship game last year, you know thinking gosh we have no chance to win, that other team is going to clobber the hell out of us and we are going to lose by 50 points. Sound like a good fan to you? Moron, don't TELL us not to be optimistic and don't tell us not to support our team and don't tell us that we shouldn't think we have a CHANCE to win. How many people have you read on here who have said that BG is going to win?? NOONE that I saw. We say that we could easily mix things up enough to cause OK some problems and make a game of it and if we play our best and do most things right that we can win. Is there something wrong with being confident? Grow up dude and respect others that mommy should've taught you when you were 5 years old.

He's gonna explode!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're out of your mind. I'm glad you're fans of this team and I never said you shouldn't be. But you should be realistic. I'm from Oklahoma and I followed OU even when we had Gibbs and even worse, Schnellenberger and John Blake. Even when we suck we still have a great tradition that few others have. Even when we're down we know we'll dominate again. And, yes, there were fools on here predicting a BG win, which is why I started posting in the first place. There's a thread with a BG winning score prediction. It's one thing to be optimistic, it's another to be stupid. You should treat this game as a good learning experience for your players and quit thinking about coming into Norman when we have more returning seniors than ever before on a team that played for the NC and think you'll win. We could play 50 teams and I'd bet we would win every time.

We are being realistic and tradition is what BG is all about. But since you know absolutely nothing about us, you wouldn't realize that. Obviously you are one of the many who has shut BG out of this game and that is where you are going wrong. Anything can happen on any given day. For all you know, our players could go after White's knees on a late hit and end his career. If that happened, it'd be a whole different game. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN SO DO NOT EXCLUDE THE POSSIBILITY OF US WINNING! I don't want to start talking because the game could go either way. If we win, you might as well never get on this site again because you will officially be the biggest moron in the world. If we lose, you can brag all you want but I will still be here supporting the Brown and Orange! Go Falcons and shut this tard up!
