Davidson invited to NFL Combine

Post by BillyLP »

Probably not a surprise here. Joe Davidson has been invited to attend the NFL Combine. One of seven punters to receive an invite.

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.

I stand by my belief that he won't be drafted, but he'll be high on a number of teams' lists as a UDFA. If nothing else, he'll certainly receive some training camp invites. And knowing how hard he works, I think he will make a team very happy this fall and beyond. Good luck, Joe!

Yeah, most teams don't use picks on punters. No doubt he'll get tons of interest though and I'm confident we'll see him with a team next season.

They don't use picks on punters or kickers, unless they are the Buccaneers, trading up to draft a kicker in the 2nd round who only lasted 2 or 3 years there... yeesh.

In 2017 no punters were taken in the NFL draft. There were 3 Kickers and a LS picked and none till the 5th round. All 3 Kickers did stick however during the season including Jake Elliot of the Super Bowl champs.

Ray Guy was a 1st round draft pick around 1972 by the Oakland Raiders.

This is not a great year for kickers in terms of the draft. The best kicker is Daniel Carlson by a mile...others who have NFL potential are Joey Slye (VT) and Jason Sanders (New Mexico).

...But the punters are tremendous this year:

Michael Dickson (Texas)
Joseph Davidson (Bowling Green)
Trevor Daniel (Tennessee)

The unfortunate truth is that the punter position does have not as much turnover as the kicker position. A punter can have three bad games before they consider replacing them, while all a kicker has to do is shank and extra point and they've got a dozen kickers trying out on Monday.

Love to see Davidson get drafted...but he's got some competition this year.
