Since we are already at bare bones why would a player stay here? What do we have to offer that another univ. don't? I don't blame students for leaving if they cannot receive the same or equal benefits as their peers at other schools. James Morgan won the lottery going to FIU.

Flip, you're missing the point. If we are operating a program at bare bones. That means no extra's. No extra help for the program, educational assistance, etc!!! That is what I am talking about.

You think educational assistance has been cut? What are these extras you speak of?

I haven't gone back through this thread, but I think "bare bones" was meant in the sense that BGSU offers the minimum number of men's sports to stay in Division I. (The Division I minimum is seven for men and seven for women; I think we offer seven for men and ten for women. Given our commitment to FBS football and Division I hockey, this strikes me as reasonable.)

So "bare bones" doesn't mean that student athletes are shortchanged when they are here. Our facilities are competitive with the MAC. We, like the rest of the conference, are committed to funding the full cost of attendance, not just tuition. Tutors are available for student athletes who need them. And so on. This is my understanding.
James Morgan won the lottery going to FIU.
I wish him well. Maybe he can start there. He wasn't going to start here, not the way he kept missing wide open receivers.

It's interesting. In that article, Judith Kullberg, president of EMU's chapter of the American Association of University Professors, seems to be saying that EMU should give up on Division I. While she doesn't say it quite this pointedly, her vision seems to be that EMU belongs in the GLIAC, not the MAC.

She said the school should change sports conferences so it can "compete successfully against other schools of similar size and scale."

I've always thought EMU was a bit of an outlier in the MAC. On the one hand, as the former Michigan Normal College, they churn out nearly as many teachers as we do. (If not more.) But on the other hand, they've always had far fewer graduate offerings than any other school in the conference. It was only a couple of years ago that the Carnegie Foundation reclassified EMU from a large master's university to a doctoral-granting institution. (Every other MAC school had long been a doctoral-granting institution.)

Given that history, maybe you could lovingly argue that EMU would be a better fit in the GLIAC. EMU would be one of the bigger GLIAC schools, but not the biggest; Wayne State and Grand Valley State both have more students.

I don't think that case is as easy to make about BGSU. For us, the MAC is where we fit. We've been in this league for 66 years. This is where we "compete successfully against other schools of similar size and scale." These are our peers. This is where we belong.

No educational assistance....Morgan got his degree playing a D1 sport with a virtually year round schedule in three years. Are you saying if he went to FIU he would have earned it in two?

And what "extras" are you referring to? I honestly don't know....What does a school like FIU offer a student athlete that we don't?

I sincerely hope you're right my friend. Coach JInks really needs to step it up in year 3...IMHO, we need to get at least 6 wins this year and no worse than 4-4 in the MAC. With a very challenging schedule, he has his work cut out. GO FALCONS!!!
