RIP Reggie Oliver

Post by gmartin »

Former BG assistant coach Reggie Oliver has passed away. Oliver was an assistant coach for 6 years under Stoltz and Moe Ankney. Oliver was known best for being the QB on the Marshall football team after the plane crash that took the lives of most of its players in 1970. Oliver started as freshman at Marshall and the 1971 team under coach Jack Lengyl won 2 games, one being against BG.

RIP Reggie Oliver.

A sad day for the sport. He was one of the good ones and a tremendous leader, stepping up as a young man at a critical moment.

In 1986 I tried to walk on as kicker at BG and Coach Oliver was timing guys in the 40. Let's just say I've always been a distance kind of runner and not speed. After I ran a 5.2 (lol) Coach Oliver looked at me and said "Wherley, what the hell position are you trying out for??". I said "Placekicker, Coach". He said "Yeah, that's about the only position on this team with that lack of speed. Bernie Kosar would beat you in a 40 yard dash". It was hilarious. Needless to say I didn't make the team and BG had an All MAC kicker in Paul Silvi anyway. I went on to hang up my cleats and played in bands and partied. lol.

Sorry to hear of his passing...
