Kent State
Re: Kent State
Rebuild yes, but we don't have the resources to pay for an experienced coach. Stop dreaming , who want to come to BGSU and coach if they have experience? We have the same problem as those Cleveland Browns and colors. We have to look for a young coach and motivated to move up the ranks of coaching quick. My thinking is Freeman or another young guy that has ties to region. Either way we need a fresh restart for all of are student athletes and family. This is shameful to say, because I bleed BGSU. We went from the top to the basement in all of our sports.
Re: Kent State
Agreed. I had no idea who #5 was who caught that late TD. Whoever the next coach is will have a total overhaul but will inherit some good pieces, both in offensive skill players and in DBs.jpfalcon09 wrote:I also believe there's still a lot of untapped talent on the roster that the coaching staff has failed to bring out.

Re: Kent State
We desperately need an Urban Meyer. I haven't watched much this year, but I did turn it on and watch the entire game last night (minus putting my kid in bed).
We are awful. The opponent was awful. Both OLs were a complete trainwreck, ours especially so. Doege can play a little, but could clean up some accuracy issues. And we have a couple WRs I liked. I know Clair can run if he was healthy. But good god that OL is HORRIBLE.
When Urban got here he went into the weightroom with every OL and lit into their asses. At the time we had only 1 OL on the team who could bench 400#. He knew that would not cut it. This current group looks as soft and weak as that Blackney team did. Hell, this team may actually be worse than that last year of Blackney.
We need that ultimate motivator to come in here and get these guys working again. Many of Urb's tactics don't fly today (and probably never should have), but we need that motivator. That's what Dino could do. The stuff the Dabos, the Flecks, etc, do. We need somebody that can relate to these kids and get them fired up to work their asses off to get better. Obviously we need that guy to be able to recruit and improve the overall talent base, but most importantly we need the guy that can come in and make the kids we currently have better.
Oh, and the way the final drive last night was handled from coaching I wouldn't hire Pelini to HC a 5 year old flag football team. Sitting on 2 timeouts to watch a minute go off the clock is the same bullshit I"ve watched in Cleveland for years. How freaking hard is it, as a head coach, to understand when to call time outs!?

Not quite all of our sports. We have the #9 ranked hockey team. Women's Soccer is 2 wins from an NCAA tournament bid. Volleyball doing quite well. Men'ssoccer on upswing. Baseball and softball should be top 3 teams. Women's basketball will be much improved. It's mainly football and basketball.hiway44 wrote:This is shameful to say, because I bleed BGSU. Hockey was there at one time. Coaching, University, alumni, and local support has brought it to what it is today.gmartin wrote:Not quite all of our sports. We have the #9 ranked hockey team. Re: Kent State
I'm on board with that, Hammb. I would not even interview Pelini for the full time job. Clock mismanagement, bushels of penalties, people not lining up where they should be and having to burn time outs and play calling that, at times, had me wondering if the guy calling plays understood the concept of football. All of these things are problems that have been going on all year. Pelini hasn't seemed to do much of anything to improve them in his first 2 weeks.
There were a few well designed, well executed plays, but on 3 occasions at crucial points in the game that were obvious pass situations on 3rd and long they run straight up the middle for nothing. I can see trying something like that to try to catch them off guard to make some yards if you're planning to go for it on 4th down, but they just punted after each time. If that gamble doesn't work the first time, what made you think it would work the 2nd and 3rd times? Nonsensical.
On the positive side, it was clear the defense played harder. Yes, it helped that they were playing a weak opponent, but at least they gave a better effort and played more aggressively. But at the end of the game when it was time to decide who wins and who loses, our guys on both sides of the ball didn't step up the intensity when Kent did. Even when we're in games, we have no killer instinct and just don't seem to know how to ratchet it up and make plays when the game's on the line. We need a coach that's got a track record of winning and the ability to instill it in these players.

Attendance was 13,131. I think they forgot to take off the proceeding 1. More like 3131. I doubt even 10,000 people across America even watched the game.

There are 130 FBS head coaching positions and a small minority of these come available each year. If someone has the dream of being head coach of an FBS program, people will come calling. BG is still a good job despite recent struggles, and three current P5 coaches will be able to vouch for that. If Moose wants football to be the flagship of the athletic department then he'll put his money where his mouth is. Otherwise, as Dave Briggs wrote earlier this week, invest the money in hockey and other programs where you can actually compete with the big boys.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: Kent State
In the press conference Moose clearly stated that the next coach would be making north of 500K. I'm guessing the next coach will be making about 575k or 600k.
Re: Kent State
After last night I have to wonder if firing Jinks mid season was the right move?
Reasons why it was a good idea:
1. Jinks can't coach - 0-2 without him
2. Motivate team - ideally the players would rally around the "new" coach and we could end the season on a wining streak, BUT Carl (said in my Rick Grimes voice) clearly can not or does not want to coach this team and we have looked no better then under Jinks
3. Search for coach - We can not reach out to any coach that is still under contract without that school's permission (highly unlikely to get while the season is under way). If we want a FBS assistant they might not show until bowl season is over, if we want an FCS winner they may begin the playoff well into December. With Early signing day 12/19, who in the world would sign with us?
To my first point, if were are gonna lose, it would have been better to have Jinks still here to recruit. If a kid really liked BG they might not have bailed before the early signing period. Now we have given kids lots of time to bail and can't even entice them with our potential coach

"Hyperbole" is being kind. There are plenty of experienced coaches out there looking for an opportunity like the one we have to offer. This is a great opportunity. A good coach can win here. If we want an experienced coach, we will hire one without too much trouble.jpfalcon09 wrote:The hyperbole in this post is off the charts.hiway44 wrote:Rebuild yes, but we don't have the resources to pay for an experienced coach. And Bowling Green most definitely is not in the basement in all sports. As others have noted, it isn't even November yet and we already have a Top 10 hockey team and a regular season championship in women's soccer.
Re: Kent State
Pathetic, just pathetic! The worst offensive line in the MAC, and therefore in FBS. Terrible play calling. Miserable officiating. Multiple holding calls missed on Kent. Kent players jacked up the whole game, confident, aggressive. BG players--missed tackles, out of position, missed assignments.
This is the worst BG team I have ever seen since I started to school at BG in 1964; a season ticket holder since the mid-70's. The house cleaning can't come soon enough.

Re: Kent State
Yes, it was still the right move, especially if there was external pressure on Moose to pull the trigger. Jinks had enough time to demonstrate the program was moving in the right direction and it clearly wasn't. Pelini wasn't going to change anything. If you believe the team was going to respond differently to him then you'd be mistaken. Pelini's in a no win situation here. He inherits a terrible football team that likely knows it isn't very good and is playing out the string. He's taking one for the team knowing he likely isn't going to be chosen for the job. Best case scenario is that he's retained by the next head coach in the DC role for the sake of continuity.2006Grad wrote:After last night I have to wonder if firing Jinks mid season was the right move?

I think when it comes to recruiting it's a wash. Some kids were going to bail due to the poor performance of the team. Others would end up getting contacted by other programs and could be flipped, not to mention other MAC coaches in their ear telling them that Jinks will be fired at the end of the season. Firing him mid-season allows you to get out in front of that and do damage control, as Moose spoke of in during his press conference.
Lastly, with the way the coaching carousel works BG will almost certainly have their coach selected by the end of November. They don't need permission to speak to anyone if a coach tells his agent to reach out to the university. They won't be able to publicly announce it if it's an FCS coach in the playoffs, but there will be MOUs signed to ensure they get their man. If it's an coordinator, they're fair game once the regular season ends.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: Kent State
To me firing coaches midseason is neither good nor bad. It almost never improves things for the current season. The backchannel communications with coaching agents can (and is) be done whether you have already announced a firing or not. No coaches will schedule formal interviews during the season anyhow, so it's largely irrelevant. It doesn't help the current on field product, and it doesn't really help the future coach search (IMO).
What it does is placate the fanbase. IT let's us know the direction we're headed earlier. And we all like having that optimism that next year will be better. I've watched both of my teams fire their coaches already this year (only 2 teams in NFL & D1 football to fire coaches this year already?). It's fun. I applaud both moves as both coaches were light years in over their heads. Both coaches were a disaster. But in the end I don't think the long term or short term results will really be moved any by firing the coaches now rather than after the season is up.

Yes, we might be able talk to someone's agent who can talk salary, but we can't interview them. So, we would literally be hiring someone off of reputation then a formal interview process. Which might prove risky.jpfalcon09 wrote:Lastly, with the way the coaching carousel works BG will almost certainly have their coach selected by the end of November. Would love to see a hire announced by the end of November to at least get a couple weeks of recruitment in, but I am not sure how that would work. Also if you are a "hot" assistance or FCS coach do you jump on a BGSU offer, or wait and see what else comes open?
