I'm sure there's more backchannel dealings that go on that we're unaware of. Agents are masters of keeping things secret, and if a client is interested in a job they're going to do whatever they can to set them up. It's an uber competitive environment. My best educated guess is that Moose already has a list of coaches whose agents have already given the green light to bring in for an interview the last week of November.2006Grad wrote:Yes, we might be able talk to someone's agent who can talk salary, but we can't interview them. So, we would literally be hiring someone off of reputation then a formal interview process. Which might prove risky.jpfalcon09 wrote:Lastly, with the way the coaching carousel works BG will almost certainly have their coach selected by the end of November. They don't need permission to speak to anyone if a coach tells his agent to reach out to the university. They won't be able to publicly announce it if it's an FCS coach in the playoffs, but there will be MOUs signed to ensure they get their man. If it's an coordinator, they're fair game once the regular season ends.
Would love to see a hire announced by the end of November to at least get a couple weeks of recruitment in, but I am not sure how that would work. Also if you are a "hot" assistance or FCS coach do you jump on a BGSU offer, or wait and see what else comes open?

I agree that Moose was smart to make the decision on Jinks when he did. This allows more time for a proper search that helps us find the best fit. It should also help us get someone in place more quickly.
In 2009, BGSU announced the departure of Gregg Brandon on Nov. 29 and the hiring of Dave Clawson on Dec. 12. I could see us having someone in place by Dec. 1 or sooner. That would give our new head coach more time to bring in a solid group of assistants. It might also help with recruiting. (Although the first year is going to be a challenge no matter who we pick.)

1. Yes it was right to let Jinks go mid season. No second guessing. The only difference would be Jinks speaking in press conferences about putting kids in the best position to succeed and needing to see film before answering a question as opposed to Pelini.
2. Moose assuredly already has a short list. Otherwise Jinks would still be coaching.
3. If it is a current lower level head coach, we won't know until end of playoff run. But then the transition will happen quickly as nearly an entire coaching staff will already be in place. If it is a current FBS assistant, we could know as early as championship week. And it would take a little while to fill in the coaching staff. It took Clawson a long while, which was complicated when his original DC was offered an FCS head coaching job. Then Clawson hired Elko, which worked out pretty well.
