I can see if the plane is at 75% capacity, but if the plane is less than 75% capacity you would think they would sell you a ticket for $100.00 just to make money. I never understood that.

For every 5 people that walk up and refuse to pay 800 dollars, there is one person who has a business meeting, mother in florida just died, or daughter just made the NCAA tourney in Seattle =), who is willing to pay the 800 dollars. The airlines still get paid off. Instead of selling 5 tickets at 100 dollars a pop and the additional costs (although small) of extra people, they deal with one person who paid 300 dollars more than 5 would have paid at the discounted rate.
Don't airlines still offer a deep discount for funeral situations? I thought they did... maybe they never did.

The other day I heard the major airlines were all doing away with that because no one pays full fare anymore. Of course, tell that to my ex-girlfriend, her husband, and the twins who had to fly back to Ohio over the weekend to make funeral arrangements for her mother. She said they paid over $2,500 for the four of them.

Boise sounds like it could be an inexpensive trip. The airport is within walking distance to numerous hotels: Inn America, Motel6 and Super8 on the low end below 50.00 and Fairfield & Holiday Inns in the reasonable range. Last time I flew in I got a rental car for 19.99 a day in one of the most convenient airports. The Campus and downtown just a few (+-5) miles up Vista Ave. A day trip to Sun Valley or Snake River a possibility for the extended weekenders. Just don't forget Table Rock Brewery.

I would bet there would even be an outdoor concert downtown that weekend.
