I also think he gets this community. I mean, he was rocking an LT t-shirt at his presser this week. And he knows that beating Toledo is a huge priority - and he’s done it multiple times. And he’s showing up at women’s basketball games and playing the cowbell and everything else. He cares about BGSU.
If he were able to get us to play more consistent, I think he would be beloved here. I think his talk rubs people the wrong way sometimes because we don’t always back it up on the field.
I’m gonna ride with the guy until he’s not here anymore. His teams can drive me nuts, but he’s a good dude and I respect that he is giving it his best shot here. Even if it’s infuriating half the time. Lol

I don't think Loeffler is capable of ever winning a championship regardless of how horrible the MAC is or would become. I do have to give him some credit. To claim you knew the team was going to beat Georgia Tech after the fact, is downright hilarious and almost so ridiculous I respect it. Just a week removed from one of the most undisciplined, uninspired, pathetic coaching performances I've ever seen. Most teams would just fold up and pack in the season it was that terrible. If Loeffler can continue this kind of comedy routine and make his team competitive against MAC teams I might just come around on this guy.

I tend to agree, he says things with a dry wit. He comes off a bit smartassy, maybe even slightly arrogant, and he definitely name drops (see this week with the Brady & Woodson story). He's been around the block though and has probably forgot more about the intrinsic details of football than I'll ever remember, even if he's bounced around a lot. Also agree with Matt that he genuinely seems to care about the university, the community, his players, and I know firsthand he is very grateful and gracious to donors with his time.mbenecke wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:07 am I think Scot is hilarious, even if it’s not on purpose all the time. He's proven he can game plan well enough to beat some decent teams, now it's getting the effort to be consistent every week. If he's unable to do that then it's a rather easy argument as to why it's time to move on. These next few weeks are going to be crucial to his future at BG.

I tend to find SL's personality off-putting and phony. This is probably largely colored by my opinion before he stepped foot on campus that he's a horrible offensive coach. The last thing in the world I want leading my team is somebody arrogant and stuck in his system when I think his system is asinine, outdated, and has never experienced success.
He would need to get the team to consistently execute as they did Saturday for me to buy in at all. Even then I think with perfect execution this scheme has a very poor ceiling and it's foolish to reach for it.

Hand the ball to Stewart...throw the ball quickly to Hillaire. There's your offense

Re: How many wins would you need to want SL back?
Snippet from Briggs article today about football.
"The Falcons have the horsepower to hang with all their MAC peers and beat most of them.
But woulda, coulda, shoulda, and consistently doing are very different.
While Loeffler has done a good job getting BG football back on its feet, does he have it in him to be the CEO of a steady, focused, and disciplined program that builds on its successes?
We still don’t know.
Which is why Saturday’s game against a very good Miami team is so critical.
If history is a guide, you know what’s coming, the exhilaration of a big win matched only by the exasperation that ensues. If these Falcons truly are different, they’ll give the RedHawks hell and even Loeffler’s biggest critics will have to crack open their minds, too.
It’s no stretch to call this the biggest game of the Loeffler era, a prove-it opportunity if there ever was one.
As far as the conference championship race goes, it’s a must-win. At least, more important, it’s a must-compete."

Buffalo game is almost as worrisome...they aren't as good as expected, but a second road game in a row in Buffalo no less...could be ugly

Re: How many wins would you need to want SL back?
It’s actually a third road game in a row! Pretty preposterous if you ask me.

7+ wins and no more embarrassments would qualify as a success to me.

I agree with you. BG is never going to win a MAC title (and may never even get to a MAC title game) with SL as head coach.hammb wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 9:55 am I tend to find SL's personality off-putting and phony. We've all seen this movie before: many folks feel it's time to move on from a coach who seems to have gone as far as he can go, but because of an impressive win or some other transient factor, the coach is kept -- or extended and kept.
In every one of these cases, it was mistake to keep that coach
When are we going to learn?
It's time for a change.

The Miami and Buffalo games are huge...win them and prospects look good for seven or better win season. Lose them both and you can kiss a winning season goodbye. Split them...not gonna win the east, but you might eek out six wins and a trip to the BFE Bowl

Re: How many wins would you need to want SL back?
I liken our coaching situation to my golf game.
I plod through many shots that range from mediocre to downright horrible, as snide comments and eye rolls from my playing group ensue. Then out of nowhere, I hit some incredibly spectacular shot that makes everyone in the group say "Wow, maybe this guy doesn't totally suck, after all!" So, I get a few minutes of strut time as I proudly walk up to my ball to follow up my glorious shot.........then proceed to hit the ball sideways into a water hazard and everyone chuckles and shakes their heads. I'm left to scratch my head, wondering how I can be so bad, then so good, then so bad again. I know it's in there somewhere - those amazing, yet very few and far between shots I'm capable of hitting give me hope that I should be able to do it all the time and will in fact be able to do it on the next swing.............but then I go back to hitting a bunch of turdly shots and I just can't figure it out.

FWIW, no media outlets nor Vegas books have Loeffler listed anywhere as being on the hot seat. Vegas is usually pretty spot on with these things. Interpret that as you wish, but tells me regardless of the outcome this season SL's job may be safe. ESPN's article on the matter specifically mentioned a school like East Carolina who has their coach signed through 2026, but doesn't have the financial means to buy out Mike Houston. BGSU may very well be in the same boat.

Re: How many wins would you need to want SL back?
I think we're stuck with him unless we pretty lose out...I think Buffalo beats us, but Akron, Kent and BSU are pretty bad. I don't think we'll win against UT or WMU. The Ga Tech win and preposterous schedule will be cited ad nauseum in the spring...if we even have a spring .
Next year could be worse...haven't actually looked at the depth chart and roster...but it seems like we're going to lose some key pieces
