Where do we head?
Re: Where do we head?
The only positive for us is that most major schools will have to cut 20-30 football players but that's mainly going to be walk ons
142 scholarships at about 20k which is probably low with all the other costs would be about 3 million. Can't see that happening

I'm going to bring this post from the hockey thread over here as well, because the information is relevant:TalonsUpPuckDown wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 2:26 pm I looked at the sports we play with the current NCAA max scholarships compared to the new proposed limit for each sport.* Keep in mind this is the minimum as we know not all sports provide the current scholarship max. Wow. We're looking at a minimum of 142 new scholarships if we go all in. Is it realistic to think we can afford to participate in this? With that said, the UMass AD tweeted that they're going all in.*I think I got this right but it's cool if someone checks my math.Code: Select all

From the information provided by McMahon, there really isn't a reason for BG to opt-in. The biggest chunk of the House Settlement is the revenue sharing. How does a school share non-existent revenue? Ask players to chip in and help balance the budget out? More scholarships can be fairly easy to work around if the program has a couple sugar daddies. An NIL deal that covers the cost of tuition and expenses, and the roster limits of opting-in are negated.TalonsUpPuckDown wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2024 11:20 am From a McMahon tweet:https://x.com/MikeMcMahonCHN/status/1818303124701949991After reading (almost all) of the 333-page settlement, I go into how the roster limits break down. There's two options.
1) If an athletic department opts out of the House settlement, there is no roster cap, they stay at 18 scholarships and no revenue sharing.
2) If an athletic department opts-in, then college hockey teams can award up to 26 scholarships, there is a 26-play roster cap, and teams can revenue share (but they don't have to). The revenue sharing is up to each school's discretion.
So after reading this it appears the decision is at the department level and would apply to all sports, men's and women's. If we opted out the roster limit wouldn't apply.

The first move will be to make the 14.15 million collected in 2025 student fees, 15 million plus. That’s the magic coffer to mediocre.

Your definition of FBS appears to exclude most of FBS, then. It's a weird definition.Flipper wrote: ↑Sat Jul 27, 2024 12:06 pmWith respect to FBS football...GA Tech and MInnesota are just about as irrelevant as the MAC .Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Fri Jul 26, 2024 3:49 pmNo, we do not know this. It is an accurate definition...in case you haven't noticed...nationally, nobody cares about the vast majority of P5 schools and their programs. It's all about the very top of the B1G and the SEC.Schadenfreude wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 11:20 amYour definition of FBS appears to exclude most of FBS, then. While that may be the case, even the "bottom" of the P5 are actually positioned to become even more relevant as the media rights deals for those conferences continue to skyrocket. The Minnesotas and Vandys of the world will do everything they can to stay competitive and remain at that level because when the P5 inevitably splits off from the NCAA, they aren't going to want to miss out on that chunk of change.Flipper wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 11:42 amIt is an accurate definition...in case you haven't noticed...nationally, nobody cares about the vast majority of P5 schools and their programs. That's actually why I agree that the MAC is the path forward for BG. I think once the split happens, it will create a level of parody in the G5/high level FCS that will be much more fun to watch and will have it's own level of demand. I'm really not worried. What BG definitely should not do is over-invest in football at this point with money they do not have. If someone cuts us a massive check, that's one thing, but otherwise it's important to follow the wait-and-see approach when it comes to the big boys.

Re: Where do we head?
Our lone National Title in football is the "small college" title. I've long said that we need to adjust our thinking away from trying to spend to keep up with FBS football and find some path to sanity..I'm a BGSU alum/fan. I don't care about attaching a label to the program like FBS or D1...I'm gonna be a fan regardless if we're lumped in with the B1G or Ohio Northern

Re: Where do we head?
Pony up to pay for these programs. BGSU has to recover from buy outs for Jinks, Huger, Moosbrugger and the other what 5 coaches essentially fired in the past two years. It’s much bigger issue is an accountability issue. It’s left with Moosbrugger’s kid on sympathy scholarship.
Re: Where do we head?
The buyouts definitely hurt. The scholarships don't bother me at all. It's actually why I don't really understand the big deal with the scholarship changes within the NCAA. Obviously, a scholarship means less tuition revenue for the school, but for a school the size of BG, it essentially adds up to a small write-off. A buyout of $500k for a coach is 25+ full rides. There's a lot more money being given out for academic scholarships, anyway. It will impact smaller, private schools who rely much more heavily on tuition dollars more than state schools with 20,000 students.guest44 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 12:59 pmPony up to pay for these programs. Re: Where do we head?
Reminder that we have the 4th lowest student fee in the Mac and thanks to our enrollment actually growing that will help the amount we get from students without raising the fee
Re: Where do we head?
BGSU will raise the fee like they have and do every year. We will see how enrollment does when Van Wright takes on a much lesser role. It’s probably difficult to lose enrollment when you incentivize your fired AD’s kids with free school after firing. Just because other schools do it doesn’t make it right. BGSU should evaluate the decisions made and money wasted in regards to athletics, since Rodney Rogers became President. The common theme is a lack of accountability.
Re: Where do we head?
Yeah I'm not too concerned about the MAC in general. If anything you do a 5 team playoff with the champions of the American, C-USA, MAC, Mountain West & Sunbelt. Obviously the one playoff contender is taken out of that group, but other than that we're all good to go.
American: #22 SMU
C-USA: New Mexico State (Liberty to playoff)
MAC: Miami OH
Mountain West: Boise State
Sun Belt: Troy
Seeds would be 1. SMU 2. Troy 3. Miami 4. Boise State 5. New Mexico State

OK..GA Tech beat FSU...big deal
Something that bears watching...maybe...are the struggles being experienced by ESPN. They dumped a lot of talent over the summer and had a major shake up at the top Monday as five executives were let go.

Re: Where do we head?
Revisiting this after three weeks and the MAC has the inside track to the playoff. The top of the conference has represented itself very well, the bottom...well not so much. The portal is impacting the lower third of the Power 4. Top programs are hoarding all the talent. A lot of football left but the conference getting the playoff berth would be pretty awesome.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
