Top 10 Heisman hopefuls

Post by UK Peregrine »

An article from the Orlando Sentinel mentioning Omar on their list of 10 college football players to watch for the Heisman this season.

Here are 10 guys, listed alphabetically, who should go into the season as leading Heisman contenders:

TB Reggie Bush, USC: He may be the most exciting player in the nation. He's a solid tailback with great speed who also can score on a pass or a return. That he's on a team that will contend for a third consecutive national title means a lot, too.

WR Ted Ginn Jr., Ohio State: If Bush isn't the most exciting player in the nation, this guy is. But he will need to make a lot of huge plays as a return man because Ohio State's passing attack isn't conducive to a receiver having a Heisman-type season.

TB Michael Hart, Michigan: He's a little guy (he's listed at 5 feet 9, but come on!) who is going to have big numbers running behind a big line for a coach who's a big proponent of the ground game. One potential "problem": Wolverines QB Chad Henne should have good numbers, too, meaning Hart may not even be the team's leading Heisman candidate at midseason.

LB A.J. Hawk, Ohio State: A defensive player? Realistically, he has no chance. But he's a throwback player who will make a ton of tackles for one of the best defenses in the nation.

QB Omar Jacobs, Bowling Green: He is going to have phenomenal stats, and MAC quarterbacks have received a lot of national attention in recent seasons. But a MAC quarterback actually winning the Heisman? Jacobs would need to throw 50 TD passes for an undefeated team.

QB Chris Leak, Florida: On paper, he's the leading preseason candidate in the SEC. And his numbers in Urban Meyer's spread offense could be huge. On the other hand, if he struggles to adjust to the new offense, he may not finish the season as the SEC's best quarterback.

QB Matt Leinart, USC: He won the award last season. He plays for a national-title contender. He's going to get a ton of preseason publicity. And he's a man-about-town in Hollywood? Meet your preseason Heisman favorite.

TB Laurence Maroney, Minnesota: He's going to have excellent stats for a team that loves to run the ball. But no one at Minnesota is going to win the Heisman unless the Gophers are in the national-title hunt.

TB Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma: A big-time talent on a big-time team who will have big-time stats. Bottom line: He's a big-time contender.

QB Vincent Young, Texas: An electric talent with the ball in his hands. But he needs to vastly improve his passing skills to be a legit contender.
